1 Sale, 4 Outfits Series

Why anyone would want to wear only clothes mainly from one store, we don’t know. BUT. It does make for a fun experiment, especially when it comes to showing the versatility of some classic (or even trendy-ish) pieces. These can also be a guide to putting a look together with pieces you already have in your closet. Focused on sales from retailers like J. Crew, Brooks Brothers, Bonobos, etc. Perhaps places you wouldn’t shop full price, but with the right sale? Check it out for some inspiration.

Valentine’s Day 2025

With Valentine’s Day 2026 on the horizon a look back at last year might inform an outfit for this season. Or if you wait a few weeks, you’ll likely see some refreshed looks for this year. Regardless, we’ll help you get ready.

What to Wear to a Spring or Summer Wedding Series

Dressing for warmer weather weddings can be tough. This series focused on three different looks for possible warm weather wedding scenarios. Nice weather (or a destination) can mean a beach ceremony. Or tradition may call for formal wear in a house of worship, with an upscale reception to follow. We tried to capture stylish looks for several scenarios.

Steal the Style: That 1 Formulaic Race Car Blockbuster

Last year’s blockbuster based on formulaic car racing created the opportunity to to show how to borrow some inspiration from the stylish looks in the movie with some specific & hopefully somewhat attainably priced alternatives.

All USA for the 4th of July

With the implementation of tariffs last year, sticking to all products made in the USA for our annual 4th of July style scenario seemed to have heightened importance. (Although truth be told, every year features items only made in the USA for this annual post.) This year is the 250th anniversary of the USA. The Supreme Court could rule tariffs unconstitutional as they were rolled out. It’s gonna be another interesting year, during which we’ll do our best to at least help you dress well at an affordable price point.

Feels like Fall Series

Always one of the most anticipated times of year for men’s style. Cooler weather once again invites richer, layered fabrics, deeper color tones, and a favorite pair of boots. After a long hot summer these first fall style scenarios can’t come soon enough.

A Dreary Night in with a Good Book

Ending with a style scenario from last year that is very much applicable at this point in time. Days are still short, the weather is often cold and dank, and settling into a favorite chair with a beverage and great book is a simple pleasure. It’s a great way to escape the grind of life (including digital space) and just relax.

Timex Waterbury Metropolitan Chronograph Watch

In person with one of 2025’s best looking additions to the Timex lineup. But before you click over, here’s the eloquent, cerebral yet concise, linguistically expansive analysis of this wristwatch: This thing is cool as hell.

J. Crew Ludlow Traveler Suit in Italian Stretch Wool Blend

J. Crew took their best selling Ludlow suit separates, and developed a model (in two colors) made to be extra comfortable and ready for travel. Yet they also looking smart enough to be a foundational, do-it-all-suit ready to tackle job interviews, big meetings, weddings, etc.

Spier & Mackay Brogue Cap Toe Oxfords

Less expensive than Allen Edmonds. Way nicer than cheap department store junk. Up close with Spier’s full grain, Blake stitched dress shoes.

The Citizen Tsuyosa Automatic 40mm Watch

For anyone looking to dip their toes into the world of mechanical watches without breaking the bank, this Citizen deserves serious consideration. It also helps that it went on sale a bunch (and is still seeing decent price drops.)

Banana Republic Traveler Jeans 2.0

All aboard for a look at what was BR’s latest evolution of flexible jeans made for those on the move (by train, plane, automobile, etc.) Alas, they retired these pretty quick, and went back to a softer/even stretchier “luxe” fabric.

VAER C5 Dirty Dozen Ameriquartz Watch

The C5 is VAER’s heritage military inspired field watch. Splurge on the optional stainless steel bracelet, and the classic design and impressive specs combine to make it a perfect GADA (go-anywhere, do anything) wristwatch, which especially excels in the realm of smart-casual “in-between.”

Nike Field General Sneakers

Killshot killers! What sets the Field General apart is its ability to bridge the gap between nostalgic sportswear and contemporary lifestyle wear. The sporty preppy aesthetic makes them equally at home with those soft wash chinos and a casual button-down shirt as they are with relaxed fit tees and joggers. That, and they’re just plain comfortable. More so, to many, than the Killshots.

The Power of Tailoring: Bonobos Unconstructed Italian Wool Blazer Before & After

Less a review of the blazer itself (you can find a full review of those here,) and more showing what a few tweaks at your tailor can do.

Last week we recognized the Best Affordable Style of 2024, focusing on the top products pumped out by the retail establishment. This week we’re taking a look back at the best (at least what WE consider the best) of what Dappered had to offer last year. Not trying to toot our own horn here. Consider this more of an exercise in recognizing what was popular with the Dappered readers, so we continue to create informative and useful posts in the New Year. How To Wear a Blazer with Jeans – 4 Style Scenarios

This is as close as you’re going to get to a “Dappered” uniform. And this Style Scenario put it together four ways: Sharp, Casual, Smart Casual, and a Nothing Over $100. Each offered it’s own take on combining a navy blazer/sportcoat with denim in order to create an intentional look.

Style Scenario: It’s really cold

For a lot of the country right now, it IS really cold. It’s winter. It’s supposed to be cold. And dressing appropriately for the cold weather can make it bearable. But dressing both appropriately and stylishly can get tough in frigid temps, but not impossible. Good looking tailored layers, and enough insulation on your hands and feet, can make all the difference.

Style Scenarios: Fighting the Winter Doldrums

Once the holidays have passed, waiting the winter out can get kind of rough for some of us. Harsh weather and gray skies can zap energy. But one antidote to the doldrums is mustering some sartorial determination. And dressing well can, even if fleeting, create a window of the feel goods. That’s what this scenario hoped to do, offering three looks from casual to dressed up. Expect this one to roll around back again in the coming weeks, as we hit the 2025 doldrums.

Wedding Season Style Scenarios

Perhaps worth a bookmark for later on this year? (We’ll also reboot them, as we do every year.) Dressing for warm weather weddings can be tough, because you want to be comfortable, while still respecting the occasion. That’s what these three scenarios are for. Varying from a casual, put together look, to dressing for a wedding that might cost the couple as much or close to a car. Weddings are a significant milestone in peoples lives where they usually get to dictate the level of dress for the occasion. You can show your respect by dressing accordingly. (Top Photo by Carlo Buttinoni on Unsplash)

Style Scenario: Groundhog Day

Based one of the best movies out there, this Style Scenario took it’s cues from the look of meteorologist Phil Connors, the main character from the 1993 hit Groundhog Day. Putting this post together is also an excuse to revel in the absurdity and profundity of this film.

Seasonal Series

That first day of spring. Or that day it really feels like Summer is hitting. Or that terrific day when the light and air changes and it feels like fall. Multiple style scenarios for each seasonal transition are covered, scaling up from casual to smart casual to dressed up.

Style Scenario: Brunch

Could brunch be the perfect meal? You’ve got breakfast foods. You’ve got lunch foods. There’s no judgement if you have alcohol before noon. But if you don’t drink, coffee and juice are perfectly acceptable. So hey, why not dedicate a few style scenarios to one of the best meal concoctions of all time?

Style Scenario: The Well Dressed Rainy Fall Day

When it’s miserable outside, a few subtle shifts in your ensemble can enable you to still look sharp while being prepared for the weather. This scenario created a layered look with some practical pieces incorporated to handle the splishes and the splashes.

Style Scenario: MilSurp Colors, Smart Casual Civvy Style

We’ll just let an excerpt from the post sum it up: MilSurp: Military Surplus. Colors and shades would include greens, grays, browns and beiges. Civvy: “Civilian.” Or in this case, a pretty proven formula of a sharp sportcoat, polo, trousers, and chukkas. It’s the combination that got used quite a bit in 2020’s Christopher Nolan Film, TENET, and looks both modern and timeless. It’s also comfortable. You don’t even have to tuck a shirt in.

Chinos, Chukkas, Polo

A different take on the Style Scenario, this series started up in 2017 and has been going strong ever since. The very first CCP (8 years ago!) was inspired by a look in the “Quantum of Solace” Bond film. Since then we’ve had many iterations of this simple but effective ensemble.

Style Scenario: Last Days of Summer

Sometimes you just have to create a Style Scenario to go along with the photo you took of the sad sea monster inflatable cast away in your neighbor’s trash can. But this was also created as a final reminder to enjoy the waning summer days, as fall was fast approaching. A casual, preppy look that incorporated versatile pieces that could go from pool side to grabbing a brew at a casual bar.

Style Scenario: Late Summer Super Sharp

Lighter and brighter colors gave a nod to the season that still was, while richer browns foretold of the season just around the corner. This look was put together as a suggestion to keep it sharp when everyone else is giving up in the final heat of summer.

Style Scenario: Watching your Bracket get Busted

Published in March around a time when the annual “shooty hoops extravaganza” was underway, this was a fun and casual look for hanging out with friends while grabbing some beverages and making some friendly wagers. It also contained a suggestion on how to not be a loser when entering into friendly wagers. Don’t be that guy.

Style Scenario(s): Football Championship Watch Party

While we’re still waiting to see which teams will inspire the next Football Championship look, you might recall that last years participants inspired a lot of red (or approximate shades of). And while one of those teams is out for this next matchup, another’s hopes are still alive and well. We’ll know soon enough who, and which color, will reign supreme.

There were more Style Scenarios in 2024 than the ones mentioned above. For a full archive, click here.

In Review: The Seiko Prospex Speedtimer Solar Chronograph

Seemingly inspired by the Newman Daytona, this quartz offering from Seiko was mighty impressive in hand. Aesthetics are certainly retro inspired but it also has a sharp, modern look to it as well.  The case size is a more heritage leaning 39mm in diameter, but it wears larger than a true retro piece. Its 13.3mm thickness and very slightly domed crystal deliver some wrist presence without being bulbous. And the 20mm lug width means it won’t be hard finding leather straps if you so choose. When fully charged, the Speedtimer can run at +/- 15 seconds per month for six months if tossed in a shoebox, forgotten in a closet, or left under a hibernating yeti. To get all the details, head over to the review.

In Review: The Timex Marlin Jet Automatic Watch

The Timex Marlin Jet straddles the awkward line between dress and smart-casual.  The design is undoubtedly clean, with an icy light silver dial, simple hands and indices, and crisp font for the branding. The case-back is an exhibition style so you can see the movement at work. The lugs are an odd but not totally unusual 19mm wide, the case clocks in at 38mm. A good competitor to the Orient Bambino 38mm. Which speaking of…

In Review: The Orient Bambino 38mm Automatic Dress Watch

Smaller, better, and more refined than it’s 41.5mm big Bambino brothers, the Orient Bambino 38mm could be the best bang-for-the-buck automatic/mechanical dress watch on the market. Movement is an in-house automatic which hacks and hand winds. Case-back has an exhibition window so you can see those mechanical guts at work. Much nicer leather strap than the past larger versions of the Bambino. This sized down version will be just right for a lot of guys.

In Review: VAER D5 Meridian USA Automatic Dive Watch

A watch that has an immense amount going for it. The overall feel is some sort of blend of Submariner and Planet Ocean. Where the VAER really sets itself apart from other <$1000 watches is in terms of its versatility. All stock straps and even the bracelet options come with quick release pins. When combined with its simple black and white color scheme, you can easily bounce this thing back and forth between fabric straps, tropic rubber, a metal bracelet, or even leather. If you’re intrigued, check out the review for all the details.

In Review: J.Crew’s Ludlow Legacy Blazer in Italian Wool

A high quality, modern slim fit navy blazer. That’s what the Ludlow Legacy blazer is. Designed to be a go-to garment that lasts. Constructed from nice Italian wool fabric, and it skips the shiny brass buttons found on navy blazers of years past. The lighter weight of the fabric makes it appropriate for year round use. Of course, we’ll continue to keep our eye out for sales at J. Crew that drop this foundational blazer in price.

In Review: The Lorier Hydra GMT Automatic 41mm Dive Watch

Usually when a watch (or anything else) tries to be all things to all people all at the same time, you end up with something that looks like the car Homer Simpson designed. But the Hydra is the opposite. It’s complex but it’s truly classy. It’s cool and it’s versatile. It could be the one watch many pick up and wear with everything, everywhere. From a suit and tie to a big event, to swim trunks and flippy floppies at the beach.

In Review: Orient Bambino 38mm V2 Small Seconds Automatic Dress Watch

Gotta hand it to Orient. Their design catalog is so vast that they can take two previous models, combine their styles, and size it down to an of-the-moment diameter, and they end up with one of the best affordable automatic/mechanical wristwatch releases in years. The Roman numerals make it look dressy and classic. The blue hands make it quietly pop. The small-seconds dial makes it interesting. And the slightly sized down, 38.4mm diameter should make it wearable by the vast majority.

In Review: The Timex Deepwater Reef 200 41mm Quartz Watch

The new Deepwater Reef line from Timex has to be the most exciting debut Timex has released in a while. The classic sporty style, not-obnoxious bracelet, and quick-release pins for easy strap changes all combine for a hugely versatile watch you can wear almost anywhere. It’s a hell of an evolution for the brand, which has come a long way from the dirt-cheap Easy-Readers and Ironman Digitals of the 90’s and early aughts.

In Review: Old Navy Tech Chino Shorts

This past summer, did lululemom meet its match in an unlikely challenger? Not quite the same, but boy did Old Navy release a short (and later 5-pocket trouser) that for all intents and purposes gave the much more expensive lulu warpstreme ABC shorts a run for their money. If the fabric isn’t identical, like at an atomic level/made by the exact same supplier, then it’s one of the best copies/”homages” ever. There’s no gusseted crotch on the ON shorts, but at less than half the price of the ABC’s, most guys will be ok with that.

In Review: Hamilton Field Khaki Quartz Watch

Every now and then Adam strays out of his shoe closet and reviews something a little different for him. This was one of those times. But this watch from Hamilton was put through the same vigorous scale that Adam subjects the shoes to. And this field watch from Hamilton earned the coveted 5 stars that most footwear reviewed by Adam never ascend to. Find out why here.

In Review: The Nodus Contrail GMT Automatic

We are living in a golden age of moderately pricedhigh quality, go-anywhere/do anything “adventure” watches equipped with GMT movements to appease post-pandemic wanderlust, and juiced up with enough toughness to thrive through anything one could throw at it… while globe-trotting, desk day-dreaming or anything in-between. The Nodus Contrail GMT series is the latest to knock that particular horological cover off the ball, all while having enough uniqueness that it’s not just “another” GMT-Diver hybrid.

In Review: The Timex Marlin Automatic 40mm Dress Watch

Exceedingly pleasant, the Timex Marlin Automatic will find its fans. 40mm in diameter with a mid-century inspired dial, the Marlin Automatic is a moderately sized “big brother” to the positively doll-like 34mm hand-wind original. The Marlin Automatic 40mm anchors what has quickly become one of the most important lines in the Timex catalog. Or to put it another way, it’s the head of the class for that particular school of horological “fish.”

In Review: The J. Crew Factory Thompson Wool Blend Navy Blazer

Turns out big brother J. Crew isn’t the only one who can make a quality navy blazer. The wool-blend fabric, accessible fit template, and timeless style details make for a sound and versatile foundation piece. And this blazer can be had for a lot less, especially with the right sale. Also, can we just take a moment to acknowledge the absurdity of Joe being out on the streets, jumping around with an umbrella? The things he does for you, dear reader. (Editor’s note: It’s never not embarrassing getting the “what are you doing?” question from someone passing by.)

In Review: The Poly & Bark Verity Lounge Chair

And after all that jumping, your friendly neighborhood affordable men’s style website editor needed to sit down. The Verity Lounge Chair is a good option for those looking for a quality, attractive leather chair at a reasonable price. It’ll be especially good for smaller spaces, but can easily compliment a furniture arrangement in a larger room. Not recommended for graveled areas between garages.

In Review: The Nike Killshot Premium vs. the Original Nike Killshot 2

Inspired by an upgrade Nike made to their very popular Killshot sneaker, our shoe expert Adam took it upon himself to compare this upgraded version to the original Killshot. The price difference was negligible at fifteen bucks, but still… were the upgraded materials worth the increased price? In the end, it really came down to user preference. If you’re curious on the details, give the review a read. And it also serves as a very in-depth review of the oft-mentioned and constantly being reinterpreted by Nike OG #memesneaker Killshot 2.

In Review: Allen Edmonds Park Avenue Cap-Toe Oxfords

If you’ve been reading this site for any length of time you know that Allen Edmonds is mentioned often. The company was founded in 1922 in Wisconsin, and has maintained a reputation throughout the years that has kept it atop the men’s dress shoe pile. So in 2024 Adam reviewed one of AE’s core offerings to investigate if the well-earned reputation is still deserved. With a final score of 4.25 out of 5 (on the highly scientific and accurate A.R.S.E. scale), it seems like Allen Edmonds still knows what they’re doing after all these years.

In Review: Astorflex Brownflex Chukkas from Huckberry

Where is the value in a shoe review? Sometimes it’s advice on comfort. Other times it can be on construction. Or it might be that the color shown online by the retailer is nowhere near the color of the shoe in real life. That was, and we’re assuming still is the case for the Astorflex Brownflex chukka sold by Huckberry. As you can see above, Adam lined them up against brown leaning suedes to show that the “Stone Suede” version of these boots is in fact a true grey that can even lean into the cooler shades of green, rather than warmer shades of brown.

In Review: Grant Stone Horsebit Loafers in Suede

You don’t often see bling on footwear on this site, but the horsebit loafer is iconic, so Adam decided to take these dressier loafers from Grant Stone out of the stable for a lap around the review track. And as with most Grant Stone footwear, these thoroughly impressed Adam, earning full marks for materials, construction, and comfort. If you’re looking for a dressier spring loafer, these might be the ones.

Are Meermin shoes any good? – In Review: Meermin Cap Toe Oxfords

Black oxfords are a must for a rounded out wardrobe, and this past October Adam got these sub $200 oxfords by Meermin in hand to put them to the test. Turns out that Adam was highly impressed by the materials and construction, but also thought that there would be a longer break-in window needed due to the rigidity of the leather. He still found them to be a solid value for what Meermin charges for them… as long as you can get your sizing right.

In Review: lululemon Cityverse Sneakers

Lululemon’s pants, and some of their outerwear, get a lot of love around these parts. But this was the first time we’ve paid any attention to their footwear. Although they didn’t have the best fit for Adam’s feet, he nonetheless was intrigued by their use of modern materials, and enjoyed how comfortable they were right out of the box (his personal sizing issues aside).

In Review: Brooks Brothers Chukka Boots (Suede)

If you’ve ever shopped Brooks Brothers you know they typically demand a premium for their products, but they can do that because of their heritage. So Adam decided to get a pair of their boots in hand to see if they were truly worth the premium price. As far as looks go? Yes. But Adam is a shoe hound and knows how to sniff out the details that point to corners being cut, and it turns out that was the case with these handsome chukkas. But below a certain price (when on sale), Adam concluded that they could be well worth it. One just has to play the waiting game for a significant discount.

In Review: Bass Logan Suede Weejuns Loafers

This is THE shoe that G.H. Bass is known for. Well, not this particular iteration. But in 1936 Bass introduced the first penny loafer to the world, and their popularity has ebbed and flowed since then. These unlined suede versions received fairly high marks from Adam. With a more relaxed take on the iconic Weejun, the comfortable slip-ons are easy wearing. The color just ended up being weird. ROCKY TOP.

In Review: The Best Merino or Performance Fabric Boxer Briefs for Men

Yep, hard turn. But as mentioned, we’re also including “briefs” in this roundup of our best posts, and here’s the first type of brief. This review came to us by way of, wait for it… Adam our shoe expert. Turns out his favorite boxer briefs were discontinued a while back, and ever since Adam had been on the hunt for a worthy pair to take the mantle. So Adam field tested eight different pairs of boxer briefs from a variety of retailers to see if he could crown a new favorite. Find out if he did here.

In Review: The Maverick & Co Manhattan Deluxe Leather Briefcase

And now to the second type of brief. In early 2024 Joe (not Adam!) reviewed the lean and mean looking Maverick & Co Manhattan briefcase. (Reader beware of a multitude of Top Gun references.) With cross-hatched Saffiano leather, this slim briefcase has an interesting textured look that elevates it. Yet it quietly stands out. At the time the all black version reviewed was being sold through Nordstrom, but currently it looks like Nordy’s only has a black version with some red accents. And by the way, to you the Dappered readers: thanks.

How to look like you should be taken seriously – 10 Style tips

It might be unfair that dressing and grooming a certain way can create advantages, but our highly judgemental brains get pretty biased pretty quickly. And even though we’re admonished to not judge a book by its cover… we do. So these 10 force-multiplying style moves should give you the advantage, or at the very least not unfairly put you at a disadvantage.

The Weekly 10

A relative newcomer to Dappered, the Weekly 10 curates 10 of the best individual deals in men’s style from the week before and puts them all in one handy list on the weekend.

Style Scenarios (outfit ideas for various occasions)

If you’ve been reading this site for a while, you’re probably pretty adept at throwing “fits” together, whether dressed up or down. But it can still be useful to look at a few suggestions then add your own tweaks and ideas. That’s what these are for. From military surplus inspired, to nursing a hangover at brunch, to looking like a classic meteorologist (BING!), we covered it in 2024. And a little later this week we’ll run back some of our favorite scenarios of the past year in an additional Best of ’24 posts.

20 Menswear Items that WON’T go out of style between now & the next U.S. solar eclipse

Remember this? We’ve gotta wait until 2045 for the next total solar eclipse to hit the US, but we’re pretty sure the items we rounded up in this forward looking post will still be in style. So in our view, for the next 20 years, don’t stress about purchasing, wearing, or doing any of the 20 things noted in this post. Although depending on your age, 20 years from now you might not give a crap whether something is “in-style”. Or your outdated style might be back in!(background photo credit: Scott Szarapka on Unsplash)

Chinos Chukkas Polo

An offshoot of our Style Scenario series, this set of posts are inspired by a particular look Daniel Craig wears in many of his Bond movies. Simple, yet effective, and we continued the series in 2024.

Polopalooza: The Best Looking Affordable Polos of 2024

A series that is now 10 years strong. And as long as there are polos, taking a look at the wide variety and figuring out the cream of the crop can be very helpful. For the polo shirt being such a basic staple of men’s style, there sure are a lot of bad ones out there. But these aren’t those. These are not your grandpa’s boxy, logo emblazoned golf shirt. These are slim or athletic, clean, lean and mean.

The 10 Sweater Styles of a Stylish Man’s Wardrobe

Sweaters can be one of the easiest ways to elevate an outfit, bridging the gap between casual and formal. This post took a deep dive into the different types of men’s sweaters, along with some of the pros and cons that accompany them. For such a utilitarian garment, there’s a lot of nuance and style considerations to it.

6 Types of Pants Cool Enough for Summer

Pants and summer. Not always the most comfortable combination. But sometimes you just can’t wear shorts. And when it’s blazing hot, picking the wrong pair of trousers could leave you cooked. Not all pants are made for the high temps of the hottest season, but we guided you towards 6 different types, with multiple picks from each, to keep you cool on the hottest day in a variety of situations.

Men’s Style Predictions for 2024

How’d we do? Pant fits, A.I., dressing like Kramer… these all had question marks attached to them in early 2024. We gave our two cents about how it would pan out. Maybe you did too. Predictions might not always be accurate, but they can be fun to make.

Coming up tomorrow… day one of reviews, reviews, and more reviews. It’ll be one half of the best reviews that ran on Dappered in 2024.

Skimp or Spend? A buying guide for men’s suits, blazers, jeans, watches, and more https://dappered.com/2024/09/skimp-or-spend-a-buying-guide-for-mens-suits-blazers-jeans-watches-and-more/ Wed, 11 Sep 2024 10:00:30 +0000 https://dappereddev.wpenginepowered.com/?p=194138 Heads up: Buying via our links results in us getting a commission (not always, but just about), which helps keep the lights on around here. What pieces in a guy’s wardrobe can you go cheap on without getting burned? Which items are you better off saving up for? Here’s a breakdown of what to (maybe) skimp on, and what you’re better off spending big for. As always season to taste, environment, experience, etc. These are more guidelines than actual rules. What works for someone who wears a suit and tie 5 days a week won’t work for someone who wears a suit and tie twice (or less) per year. Each can have a great sense of style, and the tools (clothes) used for each will be different.

Suits: Neither Skimp nor Spend big (stick to the middle ground)

Wait, NEITHER skimp nor spend? Nothing like breaking the rules right from the start. Should you buy a $150 suit? No. Construction and fabric at that level is garbage, therefor it’ll look and feel like crap. Should you spend a ton and get a fancy $1000+ suit? For most of us, no way. Why? Because a well fitting $500 suit will look better than an ill fitting suit which cost thousands of dollars.

Know which brands provide the best bang for the buck, know which colors to buy first, and know what to ask your tailor to do to your suit(s) upon arrival. Put it all together and the end result is the mid-range being the right call for most.

Shoes: Spend on Dress Shoes and Boots. Skimp on the rest.

Unless you’re a sneaker head, keep your cash for dress shoes and boots, with the exception being athletic sneakers you’re doing hard workouts in (your feet will thank you). If you’re putting together a footwear arsenal from scratch, spend on well made, recraftable shoes such as those from Allen Edmonds, and learn how to take care of them. Buy during big sales (Anniversary, Rediscover America, etc) and you’ll get a lot for your money. When you want (or need) to look your best, nice shoes can matter. In regards to boots, Follow Lt. Dan’s advice from Forest Gump: Take care of your feet. That means good boots for work and hiking. If they’re just for looking good, but they’re inspired by heritage work or hiking boots, you still might want to spend. Because cheap boots can often look and feel really cheap.

Outerwear: SPEND on Wool, Warmth, & Waterproof. Skimp on the rest.

Look to invest when it comes to a wool topcoat or peacoat. Cheap options can look and more importantly feel cheap. And if you live somewhere with chilly autumns and cold winters, then it’s something you may be wearing literally every single day. So investing will pay off. If you have an Army/Navy surplus store nearby you may be able to get a real surplus navy wool peacoat for a song. That’s worth looking for. Bottom line: Don’t go cheap if you live somewhere super cold and need to stay warm, and/or if you live somewhere super wet, and need to stay dry. And we’re talking about style here. If you’re some ice-climber whose life depends on their technical outerwear, then by all means, bet the farm on your gear. Better than buying the farm from hypothermia.

Blazers/Sportcoats: Spend. But try to get them on sale.

Dappered.com

Gone are the days of dirt cheap sportcoats often made from cotton or wool blends. Now if it’s under $100? It’s probably fully synthetic and cut in a wonky shape (read: chopped tail/long arms). So while the benefits of wearing sportcoats and blazers often are many… be prepared to spend a few bucks. Don’t worry, we’ll keep you updated on the sales front. Also, this doesn’t mean you need a closet full of sport jackets of every color and pattern. A solid navy blazer and a versatile gray sportcoat will get you exceptionally far.

Chinos: Skimp

For most of us there’s just not a ton of difference between a $35 pair of cotton/spandex chinos, and a $99 pair of cotton/spandex chinos. Likely exceptions would be if you’re hard to fit and have a favorite spendy brand, or *if you’re hooked on lululemon’s performance fabric and gusset equipped ABC trousers and 5-pockets.

Jeans: Spend on stretch. Skimp on regular.

Dappered.com

Unless you’re seriously into the selvedge and/or raw denim thing, there are just way too many good, affordable options when it comes to decently made, timeless jeans in all cotton or cotton with a hint of stretch. If you’re after a pair of jeans that are made to be super comfortable, stretch like crazy, and move with you as lift your left leg up against a brick wall for a silly style blog photo… then consider spending on, say, BR’s slim traveler jeans. They’re spendy at full ticket, but can occasionally go on sale. And they truly are exceptional when it comes to comfort.

Polos: Skimp

Polos are another item in menswear with a rich bounty of affordable, decently-constructed, well-fitting options. Yes, there are a lot of “bad” polos out there. But there are also plenty of good ones for around $20 – $45. Look for trim cuts, good feeling fabrics, breathability, and collars that don’t curl. If you do want to spend, look for polos with significant points of differentiation like merino or high quality performance fabric, button down collars for wearing with blazers, etc.

Casual Shirts: Skimp

Yes, there are some super nice casual shirts out there. But unless you’re Mr. Shirt who just has to have all the shirts, stick to inexpensive OCBDs (oxford cloth button downs) and patterned poplins. Because if you REALLY need to be wearing a nice shirt? Wear a dress shirt. Speaking of dress shirts…

Dress Shirts: Middle-ground. But spend on a nice white shirt if you’d like.

There are a lot of good dress shirts in the $40 – $80 price range. If you want to splurge on a reallllly nice dress shirt, consider spending that cash on a classic, crisp white dress shirt. Because you’ll use it by far the most.

Whatever you do, don’t go super cheap, and don’t accumulate patterns and colors you’ll rarely wear. Hitting the bargain bin for weird colors & patterns will have you looking like a 1970s news anchor. And chances are they’ll be made from awful feeling, scratchy material. A dress shirt is a foundational piece that supports the rest of your outfit (suit, sportcoat, sweater/trousers/etc.) Stick with white or light blue and make sure it fits and feels great.

Sweaters: Make ’em Merino, which is the middle ground.

Don’t go with cheap, stuffy cotton. Very few of us feel the desire to shell out for cashmere. There is a perfect middle ground material that makes amazing, breathable, temperature regulating sweaters: merino wool. Go with those. Usually a merino v-neck or crewneck will land somewhere in the $40 – $70 range, depending on the brand, time of year, and sales. If you do want to spend some serious money, consider a big “house sweater” shawl collar cardigan. They’re comfortable, versatile, and while often expensive, something you’ll wear a ton and also enjoy.

Watches: Skimp first. Spend later IF you want. Just don’t expect anyone to care.

We all rent before we buy (if we get to buy at all anymore). And weirdly that applies for watches. We all spend time and money figuring out what works for us. What diameter do you prefer… 38mm? 40mm? 42mm? What about style? Dive watch? Vintage? Chronograph? Something dead simple? It might be worth skimping a bit while you figure that out. But if you know, like REALLY know what you want, then finding one watch that wears well with everything in your wardrobe could be worth a serious splurge. It might turn out to be an heirloom or even increase in value over time. But don’t count on it. Also be warned that wearing an expensive, conspicuous watch can make you a target for robbery. So yeah. There’s that too.

Ties: Skimp

Dappered.com

The Tie Bar essentially eliminated the world of high-priced ties. Yes they deliver for the (super affordable!) price tag. But do know that you can actually feel the difference (in your hands, as well how easy it ties/drapes) between a cheap tie and a really nice tie. Still though. Skimp here, unless your job requires super sharp suit and tie combos. Maybe spend on one wheelhouse, really nice tie, like a navy grenadine, and then cheap out on the rest. Thrift stores can also be a great place to source extremely well made, vintage ties.

Sunglasses: Skimp

We’re not talking about gas-station junk shades here. We ARE talking about saving a ton of money on well made sunglasses by shopping smart. The eyewear industry is absurd. Yet retailers like Nordstrom Rack offer designer shades at deep discount if you’re patient, and there are some decent bargain brands out there that look and feel surprisingly good.

Belts: Skimp smartly. Spend if you’d like.

Belts are like shoes. The quality of the leather can really matter. And while there are some cheap belts out there that do deliver at a very reasonable price (the GAP belt comes to mind)… you don’t want something that looks like plastic or flakes and falls to pieces with use.

Socks and Underwear: SPEND

Yes really. Spend. Spend on the boring stuff. The stuff you used to HATE getting as gifts around the holidays or for your birthday. But once you realize how amazing wicking, breathing merino wool or performance fabric underwear and socks are, you’ll never go back to cheap cotton stuff. A house is only as good as its foundation. So what’s the point of being well dressed if your underwear and socks are anything less than absurdly comfortable?

Grooming stuff: Skimp

For under $40 (or much less) there are plenty creams, serums, and other assorted goops that can last a good while. Also, if you want your skin (and hair) to look healthier without the goo? Get more sleep. Drink more water. Eat smart. Moisturize. Use sunscreen. That’s really about all you need to do. The grooming industry is far to often filled with promises of quick and easy fixes which prey upon our insecurities.

Haircuts: Spend, on schedule

Dappered.com

Your barber is like your tailor. Find one you communicate well with, develop a relationship, and appreciate their work. Tip well and get on a consistent schedule. See them every 3-4 weeks for a trim. Why? Because getting a a haircut every 6 weeks (or more) will leave you with a haircut that looks too short for two weeks, then just right for two weeks, then too long for the last two weeks. Get a trim every few weeks and your hair’s length will always look just right. If you shave your head (by necessity or choice), invest in good equipment and spend 10 minutes twice a week to keep it tight.

Fitness & Wellness: Whatever it takes.

“Protect the asset.” The asset is you. You’re more than a clothes rack. It doesn’t matter if all you need is a notebook for journaling and a cheap yoga mat, or you’ve discovered that you truly are motivated by a spendy piece of workout equipment and a by-the-hour personal trainer. Find out what works for you (and of course what works within your budget,) and then invest the time. That’s what matters. The time.

Chinos Chukkas Polo – Nothing over $100 https://dappered.com/2024/05/chinos-chukkas-polo-nothing-over-100/ Tue, 14 May 2024 15:00:09 +0000 https://dappered.com/?p=256403 Heads up: Buying via our links results in us getting a commission (not always, but just about), which helps keep the lights on around here. Chinos, Chukkas, and a Polo is our ongoing series out to prove the benefits of this simple combination. There’s a million ways to do it, the benefits are numerous and significant, and it can be executed at all levels of style budgets. Head here for a further explanation as to why chinos, chukkas, and a polo works. Click here for the growing archive

NOTE: Today’s edition has a hard price cap of $100 for each individual item. All of these items come in multiple colors, and most should have some familiarity with most of the items/picks in this style scenario. So feel free to change up the color scheme if this particular burgundy/gray/sand suede isn’t your preference.

Chinos Chukkas Polo – Nothing over $100 5-2024

The Polo: Old Navy Cloud 94 Soft Polo in Maroon – $22.99. Think of these as cheaper, even lighter weight (like, feather weight) alternatives to the Target All in Motion polo. 93% poly / 7% spandex performance fabric delivers stretch and wicking properties. Soft. Has an almost brushed-like finish in the hand. So lightweight that the collar doesn’t feel all that sturdy. Might not look the crispest as the day wears on. But if it’s boiling hot and you want to work a polo into your look, then these are the ticket. Twelve colors. Machine wash cold, tumble dry low. Always a plus.

The Pants: Target All in Motion Performance Fabric 5-Pockets – $40. These things again? These things again. Almost as good as the Lululemon ABC for a fraction of the price.

The Sunglasses: Carfia Men’s Polarized Sunglasses – $25.99. Great for the price. Nicely weighted acetate frames, polarized lenses, no silly/obnoxious visible branding, and at 53mm they should fit most guys just fine. Fulfilled (shipped) by Amazon.

The Belt: PX Darren Twisted Yarn Stretch Belt – $29.97. Woven construction and built in stretch. Sold/shipped by Nordstrom Rack.

The Watch: O.G. Invicta Automatic Diver – $69.98 w/ Crown & Buckle “Griege” NATO – $28. Easy wearing 40mm case diameter. Dependable Seiko automatic movement. 200m of water resistance with a screw down crown. Just remember that you’ll have to live with the etched “INVICTA” branding on the 9 o’clock side of the case, but in real life it’s somewhat ignorable. It also arrives on a stainless steel bracelet, but it truly excels on NATO straps like the one we’ve suggested for this look.

The Socks: Darn Tough Light Hiker – $23.95. Less thick, yet still cushioned for comfort. Merino wool blend will wick sweat and stop stink. Made in the USA and guaranteed for life.

The Chukkas: Clarks Bushacre 3 in Sand Waxy Suede – $84 ($110). One of those downright cheap items in menswear that grossly outperforms its price. Shown at the very top of the post. Full review of the Bushacre 3 (in leather) can be found here. The previous version (the aptly named Bushacre 2) was famous for being… uncomfortable. Clarks listened to those complaints and built their new Bushacre with a removable multi-density Ortholite insole and a more forgiving faux-crepe rubber sole. They’re squishy out of the box. Noticeably squishy. Suede is bizarrely good for a sub $100 pair of chukkas. Laces are thick and substantial feeling. Fit is true to your brannock size. A 10.5 fit my normally 10.5 feet just fine.

BONUS  The Sun Protection: CeraVe Ultra-Light Moisturizing Lotion With SPF 30 – $14. Perfect for protecting your face, ears, neck, and perhaps the top of your head (depending on follicle-level) from the sun. A little goes a long way, and it’s formulated to be light and more on the matte side, so you won’t get that funky stickiness that many sunscreens create. Sunburns never look stylish. So protect yourself.

The Dappered Space: 8 Spring Cleaning Tips (to make it easier) https://dappered.com/2024/05/the-dappered-space-8-spring-cleaning-tips-to-make-it-easier/ Wed, 08 May 2024 10:00:14 +0000 https://dappered.com/?p=255203 Heads up: Buying via our links results in us getting a commission (not always, but just about), which helps keep the lights on around here. About the Authors: Sarah is a long time member of the Dappered team, typically working behind the scenes editing posts, taking some photos, and keeping the books in good standing. Occasionally she’ll come out from behind the curtain to offer her two cents. Meanwhile, Joe is the sentient tumbleweed who operates the website you’re presently reading. He’s cleaner than most, and oddly enough one of his (few) skills is cleaning.

Watch shown above: The Invicta 1953 automatic on a Crown and Buckle supreme NATO.

Turns out spring cleaning has quite the history, shared across religious beliefs and cultural traditions. And yet we still value it in modern times, since the spring season brings renewal in nature and more sunlight, giving us more energy to get our crap together when it comes to our spaces. If spring cleaning feels like a daunting task, here are 8 tips that’ll hopefully help you get started, and get you through the process.

#1 Make A Cleaning Kit

If you have the room to store it, a preassembled cleaning kit can make getting started a little easier. Rather than getting under different cupboards for different sprays, brushes, and towels, just have it all assembled in a caddy (or bucket) that you can quickly grab and then get to it. It’s in the pause between thinking and action where procrastination can get it’s foot in the door. Getting started quickly can halt all the excuses your mind will create to delay getting the task done.

#2 Wear comfortable, flexible clothing you can get dirty.

Commit to the job. That means wearing comfortable, flexible clothes you can get dirty and/or work up a sweat in. You don’t want to be wearing clothes that you’re hesitant to get down on your hands and knees in. That’ll only extend the timeline and make you terribly inefficient. That deep forgotten space behind the toilet isn’t gonna scrub itself. Get down there. Get it done. Work up a sweat doing so. If you’re a workout warrior, then schedule a spring cleaning day(s) into your training regime. It’ll feel like a workout. Promise.

#3 Bar Towels aren’t just for bars

A big stack of these cheap suckers will change your life. Why? Because paper towels are mostly a lie. Aside from quick jobs, paper towels are basically useless. You need something that can take and deliver a beating. That’s where (cheap!) bar towels come in. A solid stack of bar towels are a cleaning-machine’s best friend. You can use them to wipe surfaces down, dust (they don’t really leave lint behind), dry, scrub, and soak up. Easy to machine wash and dry, and can be bleached if needed. Also, if you use some on something you don’t want running through your washing machine (say oven grease or motor oil…) they’re so inexpensive that throwing out the odd towel won’t leave you despondent.

#4 Baby wipes aren’t just for baby butts

Cheap baby wipes can be uber handy when it comes to cleaning. Since they are premoistened, they easily wipe up collected dirt and grime on baseboards, floors, and other surfaces. They’re really helpful for a quick cleanup in a pinch, or somewhere you don’t want to use a spray cleaner on. If you’re using them on a surface where residue could be visible (see the moisture in the above photo, bottom left corner), use a dry towel to dry and buff the surface. And remember, baby wipes are made for skin. So if you want to disinfect, follow up with something stronger.

#5 Respect bleach, but don’t be afraid to use it

Have a healthy respect (read: fear) for bleach when it comes to getting it on your skin, but a little bit of bleach can go a long way in getting stains out of white porcelain (think toilets and sinks) and fiberglass (bathtubs/showers). A bleach based cleaner can, in a matter of minutes, get coffee and tea stains out of a sink. And filling your tub with about 4 inches of warm water with about a cup of bleach mixed in, and letting it soak for a little while, will help bleach out grimy stains in a textured bathtub floor. If you use a fabric based shower curtain liner, you can even soak the liner in the water at the same time to help bleach out stains and mildew. (Be sure to rinse the liner after soaking.) Just a reminder, bleach can burn skin and permanently discolor clothes, and the fumes can damage lungs. Be sure to wear rubber gloves, and ventilate the area you’re working in. And never, ever, ever, everrrrr mix cleaning products

#6 Consider a cordless vacuum

Best for cleaning small spaces, or daily quick cleans, but man do they make life a little easier. While subject to battery power and a smaller canister, the trade off for the lighter weight and ease of use can make a cordless vacuum worth it to many. If you do have more to vacuum than the battery can handle, you can always stagger what you’re cleaning to create time for a recharge. Dyson seems to be the king of the cordless vacuum, and they’ll charge you for it, but many other brands have followed suit and offer their own versions.

#7 Use old or cheap toothbrushes for the small jobs

You can certainly buy cleaning brushes specifically designed for smaller jobs, but old toothbrushes are pretty handy for scrubbing smaller spaces like around a drain flange, or grout. Plus you’re reusing something you’d just throw away, saving money AND creating less trash in the process. If using an old toothbrush isn’t appealing, just buy a cheap one to use specifically for cleaning.

#8 Make it enjoyable-ish

Podcasts. Live sports. Audiobooks. Singing. Beer. Whatever you can (safely) use to make it more enjoyable… use it. Some people do actually enjoy the process of cleaning, but the majority of folks do not. You clearly need to pay attention and not get sloppy (no one is saying get sloppy drunk and end up with a Swiffer impaled through your eye), but if an adult beverage or a coffee, and some non-distracting entertainment makes the chore not just tolerable but fun… then you’ll be likely to do it more often. Do it more often and the less intimidating it’ll be the next time you’re due to give your place a good scrub. Which *spoiler* is much more than once a year in the spring.

BONUS  Additional tools to help

By no means required, but if you like gadgets and extras, here are a few additional items that might make cleaning a little easier.

The Dappered Space is a series designed to help guys apply the sense of personal style they’ve developed to the space they inhabit. Watch for articles on furniture and decor sales & picks, advice on how to style a room or work space, and tackling creating a space that reflects your own (and perhaps a significant other’s) personal tastes. We’ll suggest items that can be sourced online, but always keep in mind that deals can be found at consignment and thrift stores, local stores with floor models, discount stores, and even yard sales.
