What are you going to wear? Sometimes it’s good to look at a few suggestions then add your own tweaks and ideas. That’s what these are for. Your love is locked down… geographically speaking. But spicing things up indoors can be a serious mood-booster to you and your partner. Though you can’t go out, try to replicate some of the activities you might do on a night on the town: A nice dinner and drinks with a show, either a movie or the stand-up comedy specials that proliferate streaming services today. Maybe even have a paint-and-sip crafts and wine night. Get creative, both in what you do, and what you wear. Dress for the occasion, even if circumstances have changed. It will cultivate the right mood, both for you and your better half.

Style Scenario: The Love on Lockdown, Dressed Up Date at Home | Dappered.com

The Suit: Bonobos Jetsetter Stretch Wool Suit in Blue Weave – $450 w/ BNBS25 ($600). The anti-navy suit. I’m not referring to the branch of the armed forces patrolling our seas (thank you by the way), but the deep-hued blue that is foundational to men’s style. Navy is a must-have in your closet, be it a suit or blazer, but for this scenario I challenge you to eschew this hue for something with more pop, like this almost-royal blue. Rich, textured, and a standout. A perfect suit to make an impression. Bonobos offers a very similar suit for $100 less, but in a less-breathable cotton. For something even more affordable while utilizing phenomenal wools instead of cotton, SuitSupply has a slightly darker option. For $359!!

The Shirt: Charles Tyrwhitt Button Down Collar Shirt in White – $79 or $50 if you buy 4Skip the tie for this date night, and put on a more casual button-downed collar. The suit is bold enough itself, so balance the look with a classic white shirt from Charles Tyrwhitt.

The Shoes: Sandro Moscoloni Wingtip in Brown – $85. Inexpensive and fun. Some might not want to take the risk with the heavy burnishing, but this is along the same lines as the button down collar shirt. This isn’t a job interview. It’s a dressed up but also dressed down look. Ships and returns free from Nordstrom, so if they don’t quite fit or meet expectations there’s no harm, no foul. For an extra $30, you can opt for this fun, spring-y, plain toe derby from Florsheim in cognac leather, also from Nordstrom.

The Belt: Allen Edmonds Suede Avenue Belt in Brown – $98It took every restraint possible to not mention my go-to belt, the Italian Leather Belt from Banana Republic. Oops. I did it again. This Allen Edmonds belt, while expensive, is a stunner made of a beautiful brown suede.

The Watch: Hamilton Khaki Field Auto – $368$575. Why not? Dressed up dressed down, right? If you want to wear a dress watch, wear a dress watch. This watch from Hamilton leans casual, if not utilitarian, but the build and material quality is premium for the price and handsome enough to work for this outfit. $370ish via grey market dealers. Will run you $575 direct through Hamilton, but you get a manufacturer’s warranty there.

The Socks: Nordstrom Half Circle Cushioned Sock – $12.50. Have some fun, spring has sprung. Ok, not fully, but that sounds better than “spring is springing,” doesn’t it?

The Gift: Spring Bouquet ‘Price Varies. Going to the grocery store is now a small victory. Bring back something pretty, pretty please?

Some would claim that there is no such thing as a good, inexpensive suit. But then there are those of us who don’t want to (or can’t) spend a ton of money on a suit we wouldn’t wear with any real frequency. There are great looking, good feeling suits in the $125 – $300 range. They just might be a little tough to find. Here’s what to look for, and remember, dry clean as little as possible

Skimp or Spend? A buying guide for men’s style https://dappered.com/2013/10/skimp-or-spend-a-buying-guide-for-mens-style/ https://dappered.com/2013/10/skimp-or-spend-a-buying-guide-for-mens-style/#comments Tue, 22 Oct 2013 10:00:08 +0000 https://dappereddev.wpenginepowered.com/?p=102706 Heads up: Buying via our links results in us getting a commission (not always, but just about), which helps keep the lights on around here. What pieces in a guy’s wardrobe can you go cheap on without getting burned? Which items are you better off saving up for? Everyone’s situation is different, but here’s a breakdown of what you could maybe SKIMP on, and what you’re better off SPENDING a good chunk of change for.

Suits – SKIMP at first, then SPEND

If you don’t wear a suit much, you can absolutely get away with a cheap, fused, tailored-for-your-body-suit. It might even look terrific. But it’s not going to feel like a well built, half or whole canvassed suit. Cheaply made “fused” suit jackets feel stiff thanks to the glue that holds them together. And that glue can break down, causing ugly wrinkles under the fabric over the years & dry-cleanings. Higher quality canvassed suits with heavier floating chest pieces move with you. These jackets even form to your body over time and should get better with age. With brands like Suitsupply providing high quality half (and full) canvassed suits for a reasonable price, they’re worth saving up for… IF… you make a point of wearing it. For those with little desire to wear a suit, consider the more affordable options (like the JCF Thompson) before spending $400+.

Suit skimp and spend

Left: Claiborne for <$200. Right: Suitsupply for around $500.
The Clairborne looks decent enough, but the feel & durability of the Suitsupply is noticeably superior.

Outerwear – SPEND

Imagine wearing the same suit every day. You’d want it to be top notch, right? That’s the situation with your choice of outerwear. Your wool topcoat or trench is worth the investment since you’ll be wearing it so much. Same goes for a leather jacket if that’s your thing. Doesn’t mean you can’t hold out for a deal on them, but be prepared to not go super-cheap. Skimping on casual, lighter-weight jackets usually won’t have as negative effects.

Shoes – BOTH

One of the more divisive topics in men’s style. But the thing is, if you’re not in dress shoes every day (hello business casual workplace) a good rotation of well built, yet still bonded-sole shoes allows for dispersion of wear & tear, PLUS you get to try out different styles. It’s like dating… for your feet. Once you figure out what you like and want to get “married” to a pair for a decade or so, go ahead and lay down the cash for shoes with a stitched welt that can be resoled.

Zara and AE

Top: Zara – $50. Bottom: Allen Edmonds – $250.
Why not both?

Blazers – SPEND on one (navy), SKIMP on the rest

A well tailored, high quality wool navy blazer is a guy’s best friend… and worth the extra cash. Look for something that’ll go great with trousers, chinos, and jeans. For the other blazers and sportcoats in your closet, feel free to go with fused, lower quality wool, wool blends, or cottons. And if you’re just starting to get into wearing blazers + sportcoats, lean towards the cheap options FIRST. That way you and your tailor get some practice dialing in a jacket for your frame before you spend good money on something more expensive.

Chinos – SKIMP… until you find a perfect fit.

Might as well call this Bonobos/Dockers Alpha Syndrome. Dink around with Target brands and on-sale GAP/BR chinos until you land on a perfect fit. It could very well be one of those cheaper options. But if you end up loving the Bonobos straight fit or the Dockers Alpha Khaki (for you slimmer guys)… then it’ll be hard to go back to something that doesn’t fit just right.

Jeans – SKIMP

Apologies to the denim-heads and selvage fiends out there… but there’s hardly a better deal in men’s style than a pair of dark wash Levis for $30 – $40.

spend skimp jeans

Great price for an incredible staple.

Dress Shirts – SPEND on two (white & light blue), SKIMP for the rest.

See the hierarchy over here. For the most used shirts in your closet (white + light blue) get something that fits perfectly off the rack (like a ratio/clothing shirt) or can be easily tailored, has a nice feel to the fabric (like Nordstrom’s house brand), and the collar and button stance (like Ledbury) is perfect for your needs. Meanwhile, investing a bit in getting even the cheapest shirts tailored is still well worth it.

Casual Shirts – SKIMP

UNIQLO, jcp OCBDs, the slim fits from J. Crew Factory… chances are you’ll be layering these under a sweater or a tailored sportcoat or blazer. Don’t decimate your wardrobe budget on button ups.

Polos – SKIMP

Don’t pay for a logo. Between Target, UNIQLO, and on sale BR Luxe Touch polos, it’s hard to pay more than $40 for a polo shirt. Let alone $825. Here’s to hoping another line of Uniqlo x Michael Bastian polos show up in the spring, and they make more this time around than the sold-out-too-fast batch from this year.

Uniqlo cheap polo

Logos? We don’t need no stinkin’ Logos. Uniqlo – $20
Leaves more money for Slim Jims. OOOH YEAH!

Sweaters – SKIMP

When you factor in costs, Merino + a great fit > Cashmere. Unless you’re giving a gift. Then a cashmere sweater is a great gift to give, if you can manage to pay for the huge cost that comes with it.

Ties – SKIMP

TheTieBar has made it awfully hard to spend more than fifteen bucks on a tie. Yes, there’s a major difference in feel, how the tie sits + the knot it ties… but still.

Belts – SKIMP

To plenty, a belt is just a belt. And that opinion can be magnified by the fact that there are plenty of inexpensive belts that hold up real well over time. Some cheap belts are crap, but others aren’t. The GAP basic belt (in both brown and black) is one of those do-almost-anything, cheap (like, often under $20) belts that’ll treat you well for years. Shown below: Both the brown and black after at least 5 years of solid use. One or two blown stitches, but other than that, perfect. For dress belts, keep an eye out at Nordstrom Rack and TJ Maxx.

GAP basic belts

Sunglasses – SPEND

If you’re clumsy or tend to lose sunglasses, then skimp. Otherwise, and it stinks that prices are so high, spend. Because with reasonable care, a well made pair of sunglasses will last just about forever. BUT… there are a couple of affordable yet still well made options: See American Optics and Warby Parker.

Watches – SKIMP

Skimp, but in a big picture sense. If it’s quartz… skimp. Unless you’re absolutely in love with it. If it’s an automatic/mechanical, go low/high. Meaning: lower in relative cost (in comparison to Rolex & Omega) but higher when it comes to looks and reliability. Automatics from Sekio, Orient, Tissot, Hamilton, and Christopher Ward provide a ton of bang for the buck. Why all the fuss about automatics/mechanicals? It’s hard to explains. Maybe quartz is to a car with an automatic transmission, as a mechanical watch is to a car with a stick shift? That’s still not quite right, but it’s kinda close. Unnecessary romance, but romance all the same.

invicta and hamilton

One is quartz and was $80. The other isn’t either of those things. They both keep solid time.

Haircuts – SPEND… every three weeks

Doesn’t matter if you go to a $12 barber who’s been cutting hair for half a century, or a $30-per-cut salon. When it comes to your hair, you don’t want to skimp on the # of times you go and visit a year. Set up a rolling appointment for every three weeks. Say, Wednesdays after work. You’ll be getting just a trim. That way you never look like you just got a haircut, or, you really need a haircut. You’ll always be in that sweet spot.

Cars – SKIMP

There are a lot of guys who are “car-poor”. They shell out so much on their car payment each month, that they can’t afford to do anything else. Look into something older with character. Or, something on the newer side that’s still a bit odd. Pay the sucker off. Wait a few years. Get financially stable and then dive back into the market on something you’ve always coveted. Or just ride your bike and take public transportation. Got a date? Uber.

Booze – SPEND on Brown. SKIMP on Clear.

Cheap brown liquors can be downright awful. Spending a bit more for an aged, high quality Scotch, Bourbon, or Rum usually pays off. Spending more on big name Vodka or Gin usually doesn’t. Of course there are exceptions, but while Broker’s can crank out an outstanding gin for under $20, it’s tough to find a maker that does the same for the brown stuff.

Claiborne Charcoal Slim Suit Separates – $119.99 w/ RMN20 ($360)

NOTE: Found this in-store. Online there are two very similar options, and there’s conflicting info on what this one is made out of (wool vs poly). When you click on the jacket it says wool. When you’re viewing the tandem it says poly.

Code is good for 15% off or 20% off $100+ through 8/31. Thanks to Brandon in the comments.

If the Ron Johnson + Nick Wooster influence over JC Penny fades to black in the next 6 months, then it just might be the improved Claiborne… not jcp, not the revamped Stafford, not Stafford Prep, that gets missed the most.

Ever since the J. Crew Factory Thompson suit separates started to spend the vast majority of time north of $200, the hunt has been on around these parts for another ultra-affordable, but still sharp wool suit. Think: under $200 and widely available. Now, as recent as last year, shopping for a suit at JC Penney meant synthetic fabrics, enormous shoulder pads, low armholes, boxy silhouettes, and bad button stances.

This jacket and matching pair of pants are the exact opposite of all of that.

Clairborne tracks getting jiggy with it literallyEat your heart out Flatley. Shown: 38R jacket + 32×30 pant.

Skip by the Stafford (big shoulders) and JF J Ferrar (usually synthetic) suits and hunt around for these. They’re a little hard to find, but finding one to try on is worth it if you’re on a serious budget, and you need a suit that you can be taken seriously in.

The all wool exterior fabric feels fine in your hands. Not luxurious, but not super-rough either. For the price, the quality of the fabric seems solid. But the color isn’t solid… and that’s a plus. There’s a very small amount of color variation going on here. It’s a dark charcoal for sure, with very, very small amounts of lighter grey flecked in. That gives the fabric some depth that you’ll never find in a synthetic fabric suit. Those can look oddly flat. Like they’re assembled from painted pieces of plastic.

The 100% wool jacket is lined in 100% acetate. It won’t be super breezy, but acetate seems to breathe a little better than straight poly. The lining doesn’t catch or pull when you put it on, and the jacket it settles in nicely on your torso. It’s not stiff like a lot of other fused jackets. Canvassed it ain’t, but it’s not like wearing plywood either.

Clairborne SuitNot perfect, but awfully good for $150.

The shoulder pads could be a little smaller, but they’re not noticeable by any stretch. If only the Hilfiger Trim Fit suits at Macy’s could have shoulder pads this reasonable. These are made in Mexico, and the overall feel of the construction of the jacket is nice and solid. More-so than a suit from, say, Express.

The buttons are plastic, but they’re thick and have a nice matte, faux-horn swirl to them. The sleeve buttons are not only non-functioning, they also lack that annoying faux-button hole accent stitching. That makes for easier tailoring. Can’t lose the sleeve buttons entirely, but points to the design department for killing off that stitching.

Clairborne suit fabric and buttonsGood fabric, great buttons, easy tailoring.

Double vents on the jacket, a slim 2.5″ lapel, and while the the armholes could be higher, they’re not terrible. Jacket fits true to size through the chest and shoulders.  If you’re inbetween sizes, strongly consider sizing UP. They fit trim off the rack but run a touch short in the tail. Plenty of guys might be able to get away without any tailoring off the rack.

Been a long time since you could say that about a suit bought from JC Penney.

The only drawback is the lack of colors or patterns. If grey is the new black, then these come in the Model T color wheel. You can have one of these suits in any color… so long as it’s grey.

Clairborne on the tracks

Again, there are two very similar options of these on the web. Here, and here. One says it’s all poly, but then just the jacket claims to be wool. Ships free. Might want to find it in person first.

What are we, Kmart? Throwing Christmas displays up before the first piece of Halloween Candy has gone in one end and out the other? But it’s been a particularly long hot summer already, and anticipation can sometimes be the driver for digging up some laughs in the present. That, and the friggin’ Hall of Fame Game is this weekend.

CANTON! Prepare thy gigantic orange juicer. It’s game time.

Meanwhile, you might want to prepare for some sticker shock. Prices are always higher heading into a season as opposed to when we’re on the way out (there are exceptions). But most of these are going to get a cut at some point. Here’s to speeding through the next month or so and getting to the best season of them all.

Suitsupply Super 120s Lazio Fit – $469.00

Suitsupply super 120s

Super 120s is getting into that “this is noticeably softer” range. Remember, the higher the number, the finer and softer the fibers, but at some point it gets so fine and soft that it become damageable. 120 is darn near perfect for wearing often. Has a bit of a marled look to it, so it’ll look a little like a tweed, without the scratchy bulk. Made in their Lazio fit, which fits trimmer than the Napoli.

Zara Suede Double Monk Straps or Cap Toes – $99.90

Zara Suedes

After the stunning success of their Spanish made, tan, suede single-monks, Zara is now fully on the shoe-radar. Both of these shoes aren’t going to bat first, second, third, or cleanup in your rotation… but that’s fine since they’re so inexpensive. And they should get more inexpensive with sales. No word on where they’re made or construction quality.

Brooks Brothers Striped Ribbon Belts – $48.00

BB Ribbon belt

Who says the striped fabric belt should be limited to summer only? Key is to retire the brightly colored versions you’ve had wrapped around your shorts, and instead trade them in for something that’s more toned down like these. This is Brooks Brothers, so it might pay off to hang out for a site wide code, or an extra % off accessories code or something.

Boden Quilted Wool Blend Jacket – $178.20

Boden Quilted Jacket

British retailer Boden continues to be sneaky good in the ways of casual outerwear. A bit on the spendy side, but if the nylon version of this from last year is any indication, then it’s going to be one hell of a jacket. Boden is definitely a step up on the quality side of things, and while much of their stuff is “imported”, they don’t cut corners on craftsmanship. 80% wool herringbone exterior, nicely lined, and a corduroy collar. Simple in look + design but has just enough extras. They also seem to run 10% and up off codes/promos quite often. So, might be worth getting on their email list.

Allen Edmonds “Promontory Point” Football Leather Boots – $350

AE football leather boots

Whoa. Well they ain’t cheap, that’s for sure. But whoa. Maybe they’ll be just different enough that they’ll hit clearance at some point? Meanwhile, they’re now making the Dalton in the “bourbon” shade. And those Red Wing Beckman boots are still on sale for $199 during the Nordstrom Anniversary Sale. … C’mon JC Penney… could use some new Stafford boots to save the ol’ checking account from self destructing. Boots aren’t your thing? Allen Edmonds just released a new wholecut.

form•function•form’s new leather colors

FFF new colors

Pretty sure this website crossed over into (slightly) annoying FFF fanboy territory a while ago, but the small  USA made leather goods maker just got their hands on quite a number of new shades of leather. And they’re something else. Especially the deep burgundy #8 chromexcel when made into the the architect’s wallet. (Finally took the leap. Couldn’t be happier.)

More Claiborne Slim Suit Separates: Like this Charcoal – $179.99

Claiborne Slim charcoal suit

First it was the smooth navy cotton suit. Then it was the dirt-cheap khaki cotton suit. Now, we move on to winter with wool and dark shades like charcoal. These wool suit separates are new, in a fall ready dark charcoal, and here’s to hoping they fit as extremely well off the rack as the previous cotton suits. Claiborne, along with the more casual “jcp” brand are going to be the canary in the style coal mine at JC Penney. It’s those two brands that’ll tell us just how long the stylistic tail of Wooster really reaches.

J. Crew Factory Quilted Layering Vest – $44.50 ($74.50)

Factory Vests

Hey kid, what’d you do… jump ship? Aw. Remember layering? Prost to slim vests as outerwear.

American Eagle Barn Jacket –  $99.95

AE barn jacket

No, it’s not a store most of us spend a lot of time in (or even feel all that comfortable going in, if you’ve got a diploma or two already), but they can make some real winners every once in awhile. You just have to play the “where’s the logo?!?” game. Doesn’t look like there’s a visible one on the exterior of this jacket, and the tri-color thing it has going on (top, bottom, interior) is a nice touch.

jcp Stafford Blazers – $200 – $300 (full retail)

jcp fall blazers

These haven’t come out quite yet (jcp PR page said October for their release) unless someone has seen them jump the gun in store somewhere? High full-retail price, but we’re now back to the coupon game. At half off, would you consider either? Here’s to hoping they don’t have crazy high arm holes or thick shoulder pads, which was the bane of the Stafford blazer line’s existence last year.

GAP Colorblock Merino Crewneck Sweaters – $35.72 w/ GAPWOW

GAP colorblock merino

Colorblocking isn’t just for the ladies. Another way to step up your style when you’re off the clock. Laid back, but not boring. Does the color block thing without getting obnoxious. Skip the hoodie and wear this.

“The Monuments Men” Starring Matt Damon, Cate Blanchett, & Clooney (12/18)

An action thriller based on a book about a “World War II platoon, tasked by FDR with going into Germany to rescue artistic masterpieces from Nazi thieves and returning them to their rightful owners.” Co-written, produced, and directed by George Clooney. Also stars , Bill Murray, John Goodman, and Jean Dujardin. Release date is December 18th. Looking forward to seeing some trailers for this one. Pic on the left from over here.

BONUS: In case you win the lottery… Billy Reid Bond Peacoat – $695.00

Bond peacoat

Back in stock for the first time in something like six months. And if six months ago you started setting aside $115.83 each time you turned a page on the calendar, well… now you’ve got enough to pick one up. Made in Italy. Natural horn buttons. Has all them hidden leather trim do-dads. Bond approved.

Are you done with summer and got an eye on fall? What’s at the top of your list? Already pick up something fall-ready that you’re happy with? Leave it all in the comments. May this season of sweat come to a speedy conclusion.

HEATWAVE30 = Extra 30% off Sale items at Bonobos

Usually Bonobos will only run an extra 20%, maybe 25% off sale items code. And when they do, usually the selection can be pretty picked over. Not so this time.

An extra 30% off, plenty to dig around and look at (use that sizing filter at the top of the page), and some bigger ticket items like summer suits dropping into the affordable range. Hot dog. Only items with a decent size selection at post time are shown below, unless noted. Code HEATWAVE30 expires on Thursday 7/25, and maybe they’ll throw some new items in the sale section a little later on in the week? Who knows.

Fairfax Khaki Cotton Twill Suit Jacket + Pants – $193.20 ($425)

bonobos khaki cotton suit

That’s… a pretty screamin’ deal on a cotton Bonobos suit. Sure, it’s late July already, but if this heatwave keeps up, you’ll be good wearing this clear through September. Forget the calendar. If it feels like summer, a summer suit is fine. Not the closest fit in the jacket, so the slim guys are going to need their tailor to do some work on it.

Fairfax Grey Cotton Twill Suit Jacket + Pants – $193.20 ($425)

bonobos grey cotton suit

All sizes available in the jacket and pant at post time too. Straight leg fit on the pant. Suit jacket might need to be nipped at the waist for some. Since it’s cotton, and darker in color, it certainly falls into that “Immagonnawearasuitforthehelluvit” wheelhouse. Like, out for a Wednesday night happy hour or something.

All White Beauregard Seersucker Jacket + Pant – $186.90 ($416)

Bonobos white seersucker suit

Proof that heat makes you crazy. All white. Not even any of the light blue or grey pinstripes you usually get with seersucker. But the last few weeks have been in the triple digits for many of us, and there’s an upcoming trip to a high-humidity area lingering… HOLD ME BACK… HOOOOOOOLD ME BACK!

“Oxleys” Oxford Pants in Mint or Bright Blue – $33.60 ($98)

Bonobos Oxford pants

Not gonna get better than that when it comes to price. For when you want to wear shorts, but can’t. These are as close as it gets. Oxford cloth fabric in the shade of the season (mint) and a nice brighter blue. Pair either with a white or navy polo and your favorite loafers or sneakers. Each is also available in their slimmer cut here and here. Tons of sizes in mint, plenty of sizes in blue.

Picklebacks Washed Chinos – $33.60 ($88)

Bonobos greens

A more aggressive green in their standard washed chino fabric. Still plenty versatile. More so than red pants.

Belmont Sky Blue Pique Polo – $33.60 ($55)

bonobos sky blue polo

Still expensive for a polo, but it ships free and fast and returns are easy. Thanks Ninjas. Perfect shade. Pique fabric though, so, know that if you’re more of the jersey polo type. Has some striped taping on the placket.

Jack Spade Brown Leather Document Brief – $194.60 ($395)

Jack Spade Leather Brief

Dead simple design with a pretty darn handsome shade of leather. Sorta unisex looking with those handles, but at 16″ wide and nice and trim in width, it shouldn’t be too pursey. Sub $200 for an all leather brief is pretty solid.

“Venetian” Linen/Silk Polka Dot Necktie – $33.60 ($68) or Bow Tie – $26.60 ($58)

Venetian ties

Made in the USA, both 2.75″ wide, and both 60% linen and 40% silk.

Sebago Wide Spinnaker – $54.60 ($100)

Sebago Wide Spinnaker

Now almost half off. These come in wide sizes, so if you are of narrow feet, forget it. But, if you’re a bordeline wide, try sizing down and you might get lucky here.

The extra 30% off sale items code HEATWAVE30 expires on Thursday, 7/25/13.

10 things you never want to hear yourself say when buying a suit https://dappered.com/2013/07/10-things-you-never-want-to-hear-yourself-say-when-buying-a-suit/ https://dappered.com/2013/07/10-things-you-never-want-to-hear-yourself-say-when-buying-a-suit/#comments Tue, 16 Jul 2013 16:00:58 +0000 https://dappereddev.wpenginepowered.com/?p=98213 Heads up: Buying via our links results in us getting a commission (not always, but just about), which helps keep the lights on around here. 1. “Fabric is great, color is perfect, price is unbelievable… I’m sure a tailor can do something about these shoulders.”

NOOOOOoooooooooooo!! Don’t do it! First, we’ve all been there. We’ve all found a suit that’s a major steal, except the shoulders stick out just a little too much, sit a little too high, or make it look like the suit is wearing us instead of the opposite. Bad shoulders are a dealbreaker. Do the wall trick. If it fits there, fine, but if your eyeballs tell you it looks like you’ve got a deck of cards stacked on top of each shoulder? Put it back on the rack.

2. “I’m not sure. What do you think Mr. Salesperson?”

Yes, there are some terrific, knowledgeable, friendly people selling men’s suits out there whose opinions you should take seriously. But they’re a rare breed. To complicate things further, if you’re reading this website, you’re not the average suit-shopping customer. These salespeople are used to dealing with guys who want to wear jackets a size too big. Many habitually sell to this demo. Often the salesperson will get aggressive in pushing you in that familiar, ill-fitting direction. Kindly ask if you could take a few minutes with a couple of different sizes by yourself. And if they’re just a pain, leave.

3. “Looks great, as long as I don’t move my arms. Then it’s all over the place”

If shaking someone’s hand would cause your suit jacket to do the dougie, then you should try another brand. That dancing of the jacket usually means the armholes are low. Don’t just stand still when you’re checking it out in the mirror. Move around a bit.

suits gotta move

Move around when trying on a suit. Maybe not run around, but don’t stand still.

4. “Poly-viscose-rayon-what? Who cares. IT’S A STEAL!”

No, it’s not. That’s the combo that makes up most synthetic-cloth suits. Even if you’re on a mega budget, aim for all-natural fabrics like wool, cotton, and linen. Synthetic suits are a bit like synthetic… breasts. They don’t look quite right, they don’t move the same, and they don’t feel like the real thing. On their own, viscose and rayon are a step above all poly when it comes to the lining of the jacket (Bemberg + Cupro are rayon based) since they breathe a bit and are spun from naturally occurring fibers. But when bound up with polyester for the pants and jacket, it’s a no-go.

5. “I can’t wait to find a place/reason to wear this.”

Also a scenario that many a bargain shopper has fallen victim to. That bold plaid 3-piece suit might be the only one left in your size and 75% off, but can you picture yourself actually wearing it? Where?

6. “Where are your black suits? Especially the striped ones…”

The dominance of black suits in the 90s did a full reversal at the dawn of the 21st century. Most guys just look better in navy or grey, plus, you can wear brown or black shoes with those colors (yes, even navy). A black suit is certainly appropriate for a funeral, but so would a dark charcoal in most cases. Meanwhile, a striped black suit is something that most would have a hard time wearing… anywhere.

7. “I wonder how this’ll look with a pair of dress shoes and a dress shirt”

Sometimes you stumble into looking at suits while out shopping in a t-shirt and jeans. But your best bet really is to wear what you’d wear with a suit when shopping for one. That means a favorite dress shirt, dress shoes, even a tie if you want to get a good idea as to how far the lapels dip down and how far they spread across your chest.

8. “All right, got my full priced suit. Now time to pick out my ‘get two free!’ “

You’re buying suits. Not CDs from Columbia House (… too old of a reference?) Even a two-for-one deal during a big Macy’s sale is pushing it. Retail at Macy’s and similarly priced department stores are grossly inflated, and the suits will almost surely be fused. If they’re offering not one but TWO “free” suits with a full priced suit… probably not the highest quality.

9. “I’ve spent all this time looking. I’m not thrilled with it, but I can’t leave empty handed.”

Usually an internal conversation. Yes you can leave empty handed. Lots of us hate shopping, and we feel like its been a wasted afternoon if we don’t leave with a purchase. It’s not wasted. You just eliminated a lot of poor options from the pile. You’ve only truly wasted your time if you end up with a suit you don’t like because you got frustrated with the experience.

10. “Hey Mom! What about this one??”

Because… well, I mean it happens but… oh boy.

What else? Leave additions in the comments below. May you never hear any of these things spew from your mouth while suit shopping. But we’ve all been there.

Bonobos extra 20% off, Christopher Ward, & More – The Thursday Handful https://dappered.com/2013/06/bonobos-christopher-ward-more-the-thursdayi-handful/ https://dappered.com/2013/06/bonobos-christopher-ward-more-the-thursdayi-handful/#comments Thu, 27 Jun 2013 21:24:19 +0000 https://dappereddev.wpenginepowered.com/?p=97620 Heads up: Buying via our links results in us getting a commission (not always, but just about), which helps keep the lights on around here. Sales that deserve some attention heading into the weekend, or sometimes, a bit earlier. Might not be some massive once a year event, but still worth a look. Those are what make up these handfuls. Expect these things when necessary. Five of the better sales, one for each finger, are below. Included are a few picks worth pointing out.

Bonobos: Extra 20% off Sale Items w/ SummerSale

Behold! A great Bonobos code!

So here’s a sneak peak at a Bonobos code… SummerSale takes an extra 20% off their sale items, and they JUST added some new stock to the section. Guess this code is pretty quiet… for now. Highlights are definitley their summer suiting, including the sweet, navy blue Seersucker suit jacket and matching pant for just under $230. Size selection is nice on the summer suits. All sizes available in the chino selections at post time, with sizes scattered (and seemingly coming and going, there was a 40R as of Friday morning) for the seersucker. Code expires on Sunday.

Jack Spade: Extra 25% off sale with SOS13

Family Photo Time! Everyone turn sideways and squeeze in.

The Picks: Dipped York Brief – $119.25 ($245), Wesson Leather Brief – $223.50 ($425), Waxwear Davis Brief – $197.25 ($375), Made in the USA Rancourt Boat Shoes – $75.00 ($250)

Free ground shipping on all orders too. Be careful of final sale items though, like those boat shoes. M’URICA!!!

Christopher Ward: Summer Sale Preview

Left: Quartz. Right: Auto.

The Pick: Nearly New C11 MSL MK1 Quartz Chrono – $336 ($480), Nearly New C40 Automatic Chrono – $672 ($960), Nearly New C3 Malvern MKII Quartz Chrono – $206.50 ($295)

Mentioned back here, the Christopher Ward sales that feature “nearly new” items are worth getting on their email list for. Problem is… the automatics get gobbled up pretty quick. The Quartz are worth a look though. Expensive even when on sale, but they’ve got a lot going for them. Sale goes public (what’s left of it) on 7/2.

J. Crew: Extra 30% off Sale items w/ SUMMER30

Dependable construction for under $300.

The Pick: Ludlow Suit Jacket & Pants in Fine Stripe Cotton – $291.12 ($426)

There’s one big advantage an extra 30% off sale code has over a 30% off (almost) site wide code… Suiting isn’t excluded. There just has to be a suit in the sale section. And this time there is. If memory serves, these used to be a little stiff a few years back. Got one on the way for an in-person look. Tons of sizes available, but know that the slim-fit pant option isn’t on sale.  Just the classic fit pant.

UPDATE: Meanwhile, J. Crew Factory launched a 50% off everything (no code necessary) sale Friday morning. The Corded cotton suit jacket + pant over there is now going for $119.70 if you use the extra 10% off code VIP at checkout. Full review of that one here. Many thanks to John H. for sending in the style tip.

Club Monaco: Extra 30% off Sale items w/ SUMMER30

Images really not to scale.

The Picks: Andy Wax Belt – $13.30 ($34.50), Linen Shawl Cardigan – $69.30 ($198)

Free shipping on all orders too, which makes small purchases like that waxed cotton belt very nice deals. More than a few summer appropriate colors to pick from on that belt as well.

The Allen Edmonds Clearance section has some tempting options in there right now, including the double monk Neumora in black or brown. The Brooks Brothers Semi-Annual sale is still rolling on (picks here). The Nordstrom Final Clearance continues, and according to Mitchell over here, the final markdowns happen Friday 6/28. CountyComm has a few Maratac Mid pilot watches back in stock (hat tip to Charly for the heads up), but know that the price is now $279 for one of those.

Quick Picks: New Nordstrom Sale Items https://dappered.com/2012/09/new-nordstrom-sale-items/ https://dappered.com/2012/09/new-nordstrom-sale-items/#comments Tue, 04 Sep 2012 07:50:47 +0000 https://dappereddev.wpenginepowered.com/?p=80395 Heads up: Buying via our links results in us getting a commission (not always, but just about), which helps keep the lights on around here. Nordstrom Sneaky Sale – September 2012

You’re a tricky one Nordstrom.  All the other retailers go full attention-whore when they offer even the slightest bit of markdowns.  You?  You play it cool.  Cold even.  Nary a mention of the injection of new stock to your sale section.  A small mention of a shoe sale on your Facebook page, and then a few buried graphics on the site.  Right.  Cold.

This thing has the feel of a very late summer clearance, so you won’t find a ton of clothing picks below since size ranges are almost non existent.  What has been picked will have at least some decent size selection as of post time.
.

Boss Black Round Silver Dial Watch – $96.90 ($195)
Lots of looks for under a hundred.

Clean with class to burn.  Textured grid center keeps the dial from looking too blank.  Perfect 40mm case diameter.  Mineral crystal, a quartz of course, and now under $100.

John Varvatos Star USA “Filmore” striped suit – $349.90 ($695)
Down to on-sale BR price levels.

Looks a little chopped in the jacket, but maybe that’s just the model?  If not, at least it ships and returns free.  A true suit with unhemmed trousers.  Considered a trim fit.  Wool, and from one of the more affordable Varvatos lines.

John Varvatos Star USA “Filmore” checked suit – $349.90 ($695)
Sizes are pretty limited on this one.

A safer play than the grey stripes, this one is more subtle with a blue on navy check pattern.  Perfect for the guys who want something with a little bit of depth to it, but don’t want to go over the top with noticeable patterns.

Linea Naturale ‘Maestro’ Frosted Check Wool Trousers – $76.90 ($155)
Conservative but not crusty.

Better not call these Bob pants.  Speaking of subtle patterns, same theory goes for these as the checked suit only they’re solo pant form.  Flat front, mid-rise, made from lightweight Italian wool.  For those that believe in the power of pants.

Cole Haan Howland Penny Driver – $99.90 ($148)
Check the reviews on these. They’re mixed.

Perfect color, and they happen to also be available in a wide width.  But be warned, these apparently run narrow.  Reviews are really mixed on these, with complaints of tearing through the toes only after a few months.  Rear heel doesn’t have any real discernible branding, unlike the well liked by some Polo driver series.

Calibrate Navigator Sunglasses – $33.90 ($69.50)
Free shipping/returns is a huge plus for sunglasses.

Haven’t ever seen these in person, but they’ve always had potential.  The wire frame / plastic earpieces look has always been a nice blend.  Classy, but not full on aviator.  Lenses don’t look to be too big on these either.

Happy Socks striped/solid 2-pack – $8.90 ($19.00)
Oscar and Felix.

Y’know how you hedge when it comes to the loud sock thing?  You get a pair, in this case for “free”, that’s a solid cousin of your big and bold striped socks.  $8.90 for two pairs and they ship free.

RVCA Weekend Duffel – $39.90 ($60)
Black is the new, uh, black.

A brutally basic bag for the guys who have zero interest in the good-looking-duffel trend, yet still need something to put their crap in for a couple of days away.  That bandana tied to a stick hobo look just doesn’t work.  Cheap.  2508 cubic inches of space.  No Puma logo on the exterior.

Jack Spade Card Case in cross-hatch – $36.90 ($75) or grain – $31.90 ($65)
Subtle texture is a plus.

Jack Spade is a brand that has mastered that modern but not too modern look.  And sometimes they’ll make you pay for it.  Not here though.  Well, thirty bucks still isn’t pennies, but they’re pretty classy.

Red Wing Classic Moc – $159.90 ($240) | Iron Ranger – $179.90 ($280)
Poops out flip flops.

BEASTS.  Made in America beasts.  33% off on each of these, which means there’s a chance they’ll dip further to 50% off if they hang around for awhile longer.  Lots of sizes available.  Legendary quality.  The anti-croc.

No word if/when prices expires or if further reductions will be taken.  Sipping & returns are free at Nordstrom.

Ask A Woman: Wedding Wardrobe – The rough scenario.

If you’ve got a question that needs the female treatment, chances are you’re not the only one who wants to ask it.  Beth is our source for the answers.  From opinions on men’s style to decoding the sometimes mysterious ways of women, she’ll take on a different question every Thursday.  And don’t worry, your identity will be protected too.  Click here to get to know Beth, then get in touch with her by sending your question to: askawoman@dappered.com

.

Hi Beth,

I’m a 20 year-old student and I’ve got a slight style predicament.  My step-brother’s wedding is coming up in a little more than a month and a half.  He and I are pretty close, but I won’t be a groomsmen, so I won’t be renting a tux to match.  I also have no idea what the dress code will be, so I’m assuming it will be standard formal wear.  The problem is I’m a poor student without a suit to wear.

My one and only suit is from my high school graduation, and to put quite simply, it fits me like a potato sack.  It was bought and tailored for me when I was shorter and twenty pounds fatter, (thank you gym membership) and recently wearing it to a funeral made me realize that it really just does not look good on me at all.  I have a small collection of dress shirts and shoes, and was considering maybe going with just dress pants and a tie with a tie bar.

So, my question is, do I go to this wedding in a poorly-fitting suit, or do I go without the suit in better-looking clothes?

– Trent

Hi Trent,

Good question.  First, shoot your stepbrother an email (or your parents) to make sure it’s standard formal wear.  The vast majority of weddings these days are not black tie, but it would be good to confirm that.  If you have that invitation laying around, that would also mention if it’s black tie.  Then check that it’s not an informal backyard/beach/park/BYOB and grill-out wedding.  Many couples are opting to marry in simpler fashion, and you don’t want to be more dressed up than the groom.  (If you know for sure that the groomsmen are renting tuxes, though, that’s a good indication that the dress isn’t casual.)

If indeed the attire is what most of us are used to expecting from a wedding–women in skirts or dresses, men in suits and/or ties–then you absolutely want to leave that ill-fitting suit at home.  Even better, pawn it off on a friend who could make use of it, or the Goodwill.  Unless you have an unfortunate incident with an angry bandsaw in a dark alley, you’re not going to get any shorter, so there’s no point in keeping the suit around.

But then again, you could fully embrace it, and kill it on the dance floor during the reception…

Your instinct to opt for clothing that fits but is slightly less formal, is right on.  Poorly fitting clothing is a much bigger faux pas.  Wear a pair of pressed, clean dress pants, an ironed collared shirt, decent shoes, and a tie.  You won’t shame your family in this ensemble, trust me.  And I suspect many men will be similarly attired.  I often seen men in just dress pants and a button up shirt (sometimes not even a tie) at weddings, and they aren’t being hauled out by the banquet hall’s henchmen.  At the age of 20, in college, with limited funds, you’re not expected to be wearing a bespoke Italian suit.  You’ll look age and situation appropriate, plus, that’s a good look no matter the circumstances of the man!

On that note…When readers tell me they’re poor students, I suspect that runs the gamut of “too poor to afford the cable package that includes Big Ten Network and porn” to “too poor to afford name-brand ramen.”  If you’re in the latter category, stick with your plan; you’ll look just fine.  If you’re in the former category, it might behoove you to invest in a blazer.

Three blazers with some polish, all under $100, and none of them all-poly (which is tough to find.)
From left:  Kenneth Cole New York Wool Blend – $84.99, Uniqlo Stretch Cotton – $59.90 (how to get it here),
GAP 3-button wool blend – $56.99
(limited sizes)

Something you can wear with several different pairs of dress pants, or even jeans, that can get you through a wedding, funeral, New Year’s Eve, the party celebrating Uncle Ronnie’s parole, and other formal events, without you having to shell out the big bucks for a full suit.
