1. Grays, Blues, Browns, & Black. That’s the foundation.

Not only does gray, blue, brown, and black often go well when paired together in various combinations, multiple shades of blue look great together, as do multiple shades of gray (as shown above). Focus those blues and grays on your clothing, black and brown for your shoes and belts, mix in the occasional black t-shirt/polo and earth-tone chinos or sportcoat, and you’re well on your way.

2. Get a G.A.D.A. watch

Forget having a dress watch and a casual watch. What if you had one watch which could “do” both? That’s a go anywhere do anything (GADA) watch. It’s sporty enough to be worn with a t-shirt and jeans, yet refined enough to be worn with a suit and tie when needed. Characteristics usually include a mid to smaller size, an uncluttered dial lacking in unnecessary complications, and a clean fixed bezel (read: not a rotating dive style/no tachymeter or other print on the bezel). These watches are usually found on a brushed or mainly-brushed stainless steel bracelet, so you won’t have to swap out a leather strap (ever) to match your shoes.

3. Measure twice, cut buy once

You can waste an immense amount of time and money chasing and buying ill-fitting clothes and shoes across the internet. Measuring minimizes those mistakes. Even the most focused of us can forget to send something back in a return window. Or maybe you think it fits during the initial try on, you cut the tags off, and then you realize during its first day of real wear it’s too small or too big for “real life” use as you’ve moved around all day while wearing it. Get a soft measuring tape and learn your dimensions. When it comes to shoes, go to a reputable shoe store and have someone who knows what they’re doing measure your foot with a Brannock device. Write your specs down, and occasionally re-measure if your body goes through changes. And finally, when you’re starting out and beginning to build a (versatile) wardrobe… shop in person.

4. A crisp white dress shirt with a mid-spread collar is a not-so-secret weapon

With a tie. Under a suit or sportcoat with no tie. Under a more casual, unconstructed sportcoat. Under a sweater. A well fitting, crisp white dress shirt is as classic as it gets. It’s the item to splurge on if you have the funds, whereas more casual shirts are where you can spend far less and get a few colors/patterns if you choose.

5. Skimp on black shoes. Spend on dark brown.

Dark brown dress shoes go with everything from rinse-wash denim to charcoal suits. (Yes dark brown shoes go with charcoal trousers and suits.) So you’ll get far more use out of them. But having a pair of black dress shoes on hand is a must. You probably won’t wear those nearly as much though, so that’s where you can save a few bucks.

6. Charcoal Suit, Navy Blazer, Gray Sportcoat = your tailoring base

Start with those three items. Many may not need or want more than the suit to have on hand for serious/somber situations, but for building a truly versatile wardrobe, those three items will go the furthest. A charcoal suit will look appropriate both at job interviews as well as funerals, and can be broken up and worn separately if traveling light. The navy blazer can be worn with jeans, earth tone chinos and gray trousers, and lighter blue pants as well. A mid-gray sportcoat can see a lot of use, and if you pick one in all season weight, you’ll even find yourself reaching for it in the summer to wear with lighter gray or white trousers in the heat.

7. Dark tortoise frame sunglasses go with everything

Take it from a guy who has spent way too much money on expensive aviators, retro motorsport style, and other designer sunglasses. A basic pair of dark tortoise frame wayfarer style or timeless keyhole bridge shades go with everything. You don’t want huge chunky 80s style wayfarers, or something that looks like it was pulled out of a prop box for a mid-century TV series. Find something that looks good now, woulda looked good then, and will look good in the future. You’ll know it when you see it. And all those other sunglasses will lay there unused in a drawer as you put on something like these and head out the door. Note: Why plastic or acetate frames over wire? Because cheap wire frames can often rattle, bend, or just look plain, well, cheap. Affordable plastic or acetate frames can often look just as good as the expensive stuff.

8. White court-style sneakers go with (just about) everything

They look good with shorts and tees, jeans and henleys, chinos and chorecoats, etc. They can even (sometimes) go with suits, although traditionalists will recoil at that suggestion. Of course there are plenty of serious/conservative/somber instances where the sneakers + suit thing would be downright inappropriate. But you get the idea.

9. A navy mac is the real MVC*

*Most valuable… coat. It goes with a suit and tie as well as a polo and chinos. It can be worn in spring, on cooler summer days, fall, and even in winter if you don’t live somewhere bitter cold and layer a quilted vest or jacket underneath . And a mac’s simplicity makes it hugely versatile. No fussy extra buttons or epaulets or waist belt like a true trench. Find one you like and fits well and you’ll wear it all the time with everything.

10. Care less about the brand. Care more about the thing.

Does it fit? Does it work with your other stuff? Does it last and not fall apart? Do you LIKE it? As long as the answers are “yes”, then it doesn’t matter if it’s a fancy designer brand, some mid-level mall stalwart, or a dirt cheap discount house-brand. Use it and love it. Of course brands can be an indicator of quality for clothes, shoes, watches, and other accessories. But “what’s the brand?” isn’t remotely the most important question to ask.

Chinos, Chukkas, Polo: Get The Blues https://dappered.com/2024/09/chinos-chukkas-polo-get-the-blues-2024/ Mon, 09 Sep 2024 15:00:10 +0000 https://dappered.com/?p=261304 Heads up: Buying via our links results in us getting a commission (not always, but just about), which helps keep the lights on around here. Chinos, Chukkas, and a Polo is our ongoing series out to prove the benefits of this simple combination. There’s a million ways to do it, the benefits are numerous and significant, and it can be executed at all levels of style budgets. Head here for a further explanation as to why chinos, chukkas, and a polo works. Click here for the growing archive. Style Scenario Chinos Chukkas Polo get the blues 2023

The Polo: Rhone Performance Pique Hidden Button Down Collar Polo in Blue Mist – $61.59 ($88). Detecting hints of… periwinkle? Nice to step outside of the usual navy/light-blue “blues” box every now and again. Certainly not priced like a cheap cotton polo, but it doesn’t act like one either. It breathes, it stretches, it wicks, and those hidden buttons under the collar keep things under control. Always nice to see a Rhone Delta Pique go on sale. Part of Nordstrom’s big Summer Sale, so it even ships and returns for free.

The Watch: Invicta 1953 retro Pro Diver Automatic – $127.99Full review here. This is the new entry-level automatic diver champion. No goofy engraved branding on the side of the case, unlike its Sub-homage brother. Classic, brushed stainless steel, oyster style bracelet. 40mm diameter case is easily wearable by the vast majority of us. This one is clean, classic, and clearly retro-inspired thanks to the faux-tina color of the hands and indices, simple logo, and lollipop seconds hand. Powered by a Seiko automatic movement.

The Chinos: Old Navy Built-In Flex Rotation Chino Pants for Men – $26.99 ($44.99). 98% cotton / 2% spandex. Nicely affordable. Deep navy. Slim, athletic, or straight fit.

The Sunglasses: Kent Wang Browline – $55. Incredibly comfortable. Acetate and metal frames. 50mm lenses don’t wear overly small. Should fit most average to smaller sized heads. Not sure why the Kent Wang website makes them look flatter than they are in person. Seems like their image scaling might be wonky on that particular product page. They’ve got classic clubmaster proportions though. Nothing to be concerned about.

The Belt: GAP Leather Belt – $24.50 ($44.95). Hello old friend… again. (and again and again and… if you’re new around here, we use this belt in style scenarios a lot because it’s affordable and versatile.)

The Socks: Bombas Targeted Compression Performance Calf Socks – $20. Wicks, breathes, the works. Poly/Merino/Nylon/Elastane/Cotton performance blend with targeted cushioning and support.

The Shoes: Clarks Bushacre 3 in Sand Suede – $107.34 ($110). One of those affordable menswear items which outperforms its price. Full review here. Fit is true to your brannock size. A 10.5 fit my normally 10.5 feet just fine. Limited sizes at post time, so if they don’t have yours and you’re okay with the crepe-soled original desert boot, they have some “taupe distressed” desert boots in all sizes for $150. The Splurge: Made in the UK Sanders Hi-top chukkas in Dirty Buck Suede – $253 (Check the shipping/return policy though. Could get spendy.)

Last week we recognized the Best Affordable Style of 2023, focusing on the top products pumped out by the retail establishment. This week we’re taking a look back at the best (at least what WE consider the best) of what Dappered had to offer in 2023. Not trying to toot our own horn here. Consider this more of an exercise in recognizing what was popular with the Dappered readers, so we continue to create informative content in the New Year. And by the way, to you the Dappered readers: thanks.

Style Scenario(s): Winter Layers

Timely here in 2024 too. Here be three looks appropriate for when the day can go from snow flying to sun shining to sleet sleeting. Layer up.

Wedding Season Style Scenarios

Perhaps worth a bookmark for later on this year? (We’ll also reboot them, as we do every year.) Dressing for warm weather weddings can be tough, because you want to be comfortable, while still respecting the occasion. That’s what these three scenarios are for. Varying from a casual, put together look, to dressing for a wedding that might cost the couple as much or close to a car. Weddings are a significant milestone in peoples lives where they usually get to dictate the level of dress for the occasion. You can show your respect by dressing accordingly. (Photo above by Matthew Essman on Unsplash)

What to wear on New Year’s Eve for men (from formal to not)

Nine outfits were created ranging on the formality scale from Putting on the Ritz… to putting Cheeze-Whiz on a Ritz. Maybe another one worth a bookmark in case you have a fancy party coming up between now and 2025.

Seasonal Trilogies

That first day of spring. Or that day it really feels like Summer is hitting. Or that terrific day when the light and air changes and it feels like fall. Three style scenarios for each seasonal transition are covered, scaling up from casual to smart casual to dressed up.

Style Scenario: Sleek Athleisure (nothing over $100 edition)

Just because you’re dressing “down” doesn’t mean you have to look like you lost your style. With a little intention, even outfits based in athleisure can look lean and mean. And this one was one of those “nothing over $100” style scenarios. No single item was over $100.

Style Scenario: Get The Blues!

Who doesn’t like blue, right? The challenge for this style scenario was to work in as many shades at once without clashing. Keeping the blues on the cooler, grayer side of the scale ensured this outfit was understated while still modern.

Style Scenario: Danny in Ocean’s 11, 12, and 13

AMC, TNT, and even MTV (wtf?) were running Ocean’s 11, 12, and 13 almost on a non stop loop for much of 2023. Maybe it was some sort of analytics content-scheduling robot gone crazy? Were the movies changing hands in terms of rights? Who knows, but these style-in-cinema legends were getting lots of run. Each character in the Ocean’s trilogy were in part identified by their individual style. The costume designers really outdid themselves, visually developing each character in specific ways through how they’re dressed. (and tell him he dresses like a gigolo!) Danny Ocean commanded the crew through the trilogy in an effortless look of smart suits, sharp shirts, and no tie. Hard to beat that.

Style Scenario: Seeing the Barbara Blockbuster

A nod to a certain movie that came out in 2023 and quite literally took the world by storm. We often avoid dipping our toes into passing trends, but acknowledging this particular phenomenon leant itself to a casual and creative look that addressed this particular pink elephant. Adam T. curated an outfit for viewing said elephant, and even coopted his daughters dolls into the project. It turned out to be Kentacular.

Style Scenario: American Gothic x J. Crew

Inspired by one of J. Crew’s new arrivals (ridiculously priced overalls, but *shockingly* already on sale!), and Halloween then on the horizon, a look based on an art masterpiece was born. This compilation of items was entirely sourced from J. Crew. That makes for one expensive Halloween costume, but once inspiration struck it was impossible to pass up the challenge.

Style Scenario: Lying in grass staring at things

It keeps happening. The models, they lay in the grass and they stare at things. Big thanks to DeJuan M. for making a style scenario out of it.

There were far more Style Scenarios in 2023 than the ones mentioned above. For a full archive, click here.

The Best of Orange (or thereabouts) in Affordable Men’s Style https://dappered.com/2023/10/the-best-of-orange-or-thereabouts-in-affordable-mens-style/ Tue, 31 Oct 2023 10:00:03 +0000 https://dappereddev.wpenginepowered.com/?p=248945 Heads up: Buying via our links results in us getting a commission (not always, but just about), which helps keep the lights on around here. Happy “day” where we’ve deemed it culturally acceptable for children to go door-to-door extorting homeowners for sugary treats in exchange for not committing acts of vandalism against their private property. Bah humbug. Anyway, here’s some orange stuff. And yes we’ve taken some liberties with the definition of the word “orange.”

Taylor Stitch Moleskin Bomber in Copper – $198

Taylor Stitch Moleskin Bomber in Copper

For those that like the idea and texture of a suede bomber, but aren’t the “leather jacket” (or suede jacket) type. Moleskin is a brushed cotton fabric that’s soft, has a matte texture, and feels perfect in cool and cold weather. Ships and returns for free.

Spier and Mackay Rust Shetland Wool Sweater – $78

Spier and Mackay Rust Shetland Wool Sweater

A reasonably priced Shetland crewneck. One of those timeless styles that’s perfect for fall and winter. Texture without getting into overly-fuzzy territory. Saddle shoulders for ease of movement.

Blu Shark AlphaShark “Rusted Iron” Striped Watch Strap – $32

Blu Shark AlphaShark "Rusted Iron" Striped Watch Strap

An orange striped watch strap that isn’t crazy obnoxious thanks to the “rusted” shade they’ve used. Smooth strap, nice hardware… worth the price. Shown above on Invicta’s sub-$100 entry level automatic diver, of which you can find a review here.

J. Crew Goodyear Welted Kenton Plain Toe Boots – $209.50 ($298)

J. Crew Goodyear Welted Kenton Plain Toe Boots

Often on sale for closer to $200. If Allen Edmonds’ Higgins Mill boots are too spendy for your blood, then maybe these are worth a shot. Goodyear welted, mini Vibram lug sole as well, and these have uppers made from rich looking, natural grain, US tanned leather. Sure they’re labeled as “brown,” but… close enough, right?

Tie Bar Bali Dots Burnt Orange Pocket Square – $14

Tie Bar Bali Dots Burnt Orange Pocket Square

Just keep the rest of your outfit dead-simple and quiet, and this slightly loud pocket square will fit right in. Think “Danny Ocean” style white shirt and gray suit with this as a very small sliver/pop of color at the breast pocket… or a “get the blues” suited (or jeans and blazer) look with this as the outlier.

Banana Republic Traveler Pant 2.0 in Slim or Athletic fit – $110

Banana Republic Traveler Pant

One of BR’s bestsellers got a bit of an update and now comes in a fabric that has a more pronounced twill (diagonal) weave. That’s perfect for fall, which is a season of textures. Italian fabric is a blend: 58% organic cotton, 32% modal, 7% polyester, 3% elastane.

J. Crew Italian Suede Belt in “Snuff” – $59.50

J. Crew Italian Suede Belt in "Snuff"

Snuff is one of those shades that has a strangely wide variety of interpretations. J. Crew seems to think it leans pretty orange. BUT! Don’t be overly alarmed… if we’ve learned one thing from J. Crew’s studio photography, it’s that colors can often look oversaturated on their website when compared to real life. And for this belt, that’s going to be a GOOD thing (having it show up looking more muted).

Huckberry made in Japan Acrylic/Wool Beanies – $30

Huckberry made in Japan Acrylic/Wool Beanies

It’s unfair how great these beanies are. Perfect, mid-weight feel. Not itchy. Washes up pretty well (hand wash or gentle cycle) too if you sweat in them. Not a “performance” cap but I rotate through 4-5 of these during the cold months for early morning workouts. Yes they come in 11 colors and not just orange, but for the purpose of this post (and taking the dog for a walk at unusually early hours…) an orange cap not only looks good, it can be seen better than black, moss, or dark navy. Carry a light and wear something truly reflective though, would ya? We’re heading into dangerously soupy season, weather wise, especially if you’re an early morning workout warrior who uses the pavement as their own personal gym.

Target Goodfellow Slim Straight Corduroy 5-Pocket Pants – $32

Target Goodfellow Slim Straight Corduroy 5-Pocket Pants

They’re calling the color of these cords “brown”… but… c’mon. That’s “flamed orange peel” if you ask me. “Flamed orange peel…” what a name for a color. Someone let me start naming crayons, please!

Nodus Retrospect III in Flare Orange – $475

Nodus Retrospect III in Flare Orange

A bold, assembled in the USA, automatic diver that has a few tricks up its sleeve (or as the case is, up your sleeve). On the fly micro adjuster in the clasp is really nice to see at this affordable price point. Quick release pins on the bracelet help you swap that out for a strap easily. Automatic Seiko TMI NH35 movement, water resistance is 200m, bracelet tapers nicely from 22mm to 18mm, and the crystal is double domed sapphire. Even the background of the date is orange, so it blends in just a bit.

Made in the UK Sanders Hi-Top Chukkas in Indiana Tan – $218

Made in the UK Sanders Hi-Top Chukkas in Indiana Tan

Outbound shipping is free through the shop linked to above, but good luck getting them back if they don’t fit, as that linked-to retailer is based in the UK, and returns are staggeringly expensive. That’s the problem with the Sanders Hi-Top Chukka. There’s just not many US based retailers. Huckberry has/had some, but not in the rusty-orange “Indiana Tan” as shown above. Full review of these (awesome) chukkas can be found here, albeit in a darker, richer brown looking “snuff” suede.

Spier & Mackay Rust Herringbone Wool Sportcoat – $378

Spier & Mackay Rust Herringbone Wool Sportcoat

Cooler weather weight. Soft brushed texture. Classic herringbone pattern to the 100% wool fabric. Butterfly lined in the back. Soft shoulders.

Spier & Mackay Burnt Orange Zig-Zag Silk Knit Tie – $48

Spier & Mackay Burnt Orange Zig-Zag Silk Knit Tie

More Spier. Would look great with both gray and navy suits. Silk knit ties are a timeless classic, but throwing that zig-zag pattern into the mix makes this one just different enough.

Amazon Essentials Lightweight Water-Resistant Puffer Jacket – $32

Amazon Essentials Lightweight Water-Resistant Puffer Jacket

Thirty two bucks! Ships fast and returns are easy for Prime members. Color is listed as “light brown,” but we’ll call that “rust” today.

Allen Edmonds Strand Oxfords – $395

Allen Edmonds Strand Oxfords

Obligatory mention of the Allen Edmonds Strand in their most eye-catching color of leather. Looks amazing with both blue and lighter gray suits and trouser. The Strand is the flagship, bit-of-flash dress shoe from Allen Edmonds. Can lean a little darker and more muted in some light conditions, but make no mistake, these aren’t just shoes… these are shoes.

J. Crew Waxed-canvas duffel bag – $198

Waxed-canvas duffel bag

Got any trips planned? 13″H x 21 ½”W x 10″D = 2795 cubic inches. So not teeny tiny. But not huge either. A good weekender size for many.

Timex Unisex Weekender 38mm Watch – $34

Timex Unisex Weekender 38mm Watch

The watch isn’t orange, but the stripe clearly is. This is the model that basically re-launched Timex as a more fashionable brand some 15 years ago. 38mm dial diameter with a 20mm strap width. Know that the Weekender models are infamous for making a louder than average “TICK” sound with each snap of their seconds hand. It drives some people absolutely bonkers. If you’re particularly susceptible to annoyance via repetitive noises, be prepared to stuff this thing way back in a sock drawer while you sleep. But other than that, the Timex Weekender is light, fun, and does its one job well: It tells the time.

Grant Stone Diesel Boot in Bourbon Suede – $328

Grant Stone Diesel Boot in Bourbon Suede

Oh gracious. Look at those. Goodyear welted, studded rubber sole, CFStead Calf Suede uppers. Sizing suggestion from the brand is to go down half a size.

Old Navy Puffer Vest in Sienna Desert – $35ish

Old Navy Puffer Vest in Sienna Desert

Hey kid, what’d you do, jump ship?” …. (granted, Marty’s vest is red.)

Made in the USA Mitchell Leather Money Clip Wallet – $79

Made in the USA Mitchell Leather Money Clip Wallet

Shown above in “roasted chestnut.” These are those wallets with the sturdy wire-style clip in the middle that allows you to easily slip cash in and out. They’re super smart, the leather is great, and yes… you can get them made without the logo.

(the sole of the) Made in the USA Victory Sportswear Speed Runner – $250

Made in the USA Victory Sportswear Speed Runner

NOT cheap. Clearly not cheap. But made in the USA from premium materials and that nubby Vibram gum sole is terrific. Also, they can be resoled by the good people at Victory Sportswear once you need that to be done.

WP Standard Rough-out Suede Duffle Bag – $468

WP Standard Rough-out Suede Duffle Bag

Incredible materials, well made, and comes with a lifetime guarantee. And that water-resistant suede makes having a really nice duffel for weekend trips or anything else feel both practical and super-luxurious.  21″ x 10″ x 10″.

J. Crew Garment-dyed slub cotton henley – $39.50 ($59.50)

J. Crew Garment-dyed slub cotton henley

Casual but more intentional than some old t-shirt, hockey jersey, etc. Slightly slubbed texture to the fabric. Looks like a favorite right out of the bag. Available in classic fit, slim fit, and tall fit. Lots of colors.

LL Bean Made in Maine 8″ Bean Boots – $149

LL Bean Made in Maine 8″ Bean Boots

The leather uppers (and their distinct color) on LL Bean’s (still) Made in the USA duckboots are part of what makes them iconic. It’s uniform, it’s imitated by other brands, and while it might be called “tan“… it’s orange enough for our particular internet-content-exercise.

Timex x Todd Snyder Automatic Utility Ranger – $259

Timex x Todd Snyder Automatic Utility Ranger

One of the many Todd Snyder designs he’s done for Timex, but one of the few that houses an automatic movement. Olive strap + Green Dial + Black Case + Orange bezel makes for an outdoorsy field watch that also possess a lot of good looks. 100m water resistance rating, 20mm lugs, and a 41mm case. Would look great on any number of other 20mm NATO straps.

Banana Republic Factory Plaid Scarf – $30ish

Banana Republic Factory Plaid Scarf

Inexpensive, but inexpensive fabric (all poly). But that should look great with a gray topcoat, peacoat, or even puffer.

J. Crew Perry Sunglasses – $79.50

J. Crew Perry Sunglasses

Classic keyhole bridge with exaggerated thickness to the frames. Color is listed as “caramel.”

adidas Samba Originals – $100

adidas Samba Originals

All but sold out at present, but here’s to hoping they bring these back, especially in the all-earth-tones + terra cotta stripes shown above.

Bonobos Jetsetter Italian Flannel Suit – $750

Bonobos Jetsetter Italian Flannel Suit

Not very “orange” (told you we’d be taking some liberties with the color parameters of the task)… and not very affordable… but a flannel suit during fall and winter is strangely versatile. Pair the trousers with a sweater and button down. Wear the blazer with jeans as shown above. Wear the entire suit when it gets truly cold.

Allen Edmonds Dalton Wingtip Dress Boots – $495

Allen Edmonds Dalton Wingtip Dress Boots

Already covered the “walnut” shade from Allen Edmonds with the mention of Strands, but the Dalton wingtip boot is right up there in terms of carrying the flag for that particular shade of leather. Was just on sale during the Rediscover America event, but you can always try your luck with a pair of Factory 2nds ($25 restocking fee on returns on F2s) if you want to save a few bucks.

Flaming an Orange Peel for your (or someone else’s) drink

It’s a fun little trick that really does add a bit of nice flavor to lots of cocktails. Just don’t burn your house down.

Style Scenario: Get The Blues! (late summer / early fall edition) https://dappered.com/2023/09/style-scenario-get-the-blues-late-summer-early-fall-edition/ Wed, 13 Sep 2023 15:00:07 +0000 https://dappereddev.wpenginepowered.com/?p=246521 Heads up: Buying via our links results in us getting a commission (not always, but just about), which helps keep the lights on around here. What are you going to wear? Sometimes it’s good to look at a few suggestions then add your own tweaks and ideas. That’s what these are for. It’s tough dressing for “tweener” weather (in-between seasons such as cool mornings but warm afternoons in late summer and early fall). You’ve got one foot in the past, and one foot in the future, and that can lead to looking and more importantly feeling physically a little out of place (too hot, too cold). The key is to work in colors and tones from each season without fully committing to either, while also keeping as much of your gear breathable and temperature regulating. Here’s one, very blue-centric way to do it, as we move from summer to fall.

get the blues fall 2023

The Blazer: Spier and Mackay Wool/Elastane/Silk Hopsack Blazer – $398. It’s been a while since Spier had a foundational navy blazer in stock. And boy did they come back with what appears to be a great one. Hopsack weave makes it extra comfortable and breathable. 95% Wool / 3% Elastane / 2% Silk blend crease resistant fabric. Butterfly lined back, unpadded shoulders, and half-canvas construction. Wear it with jeans, cords, wool dress pants, chinos, etc. Well worth the investment.

The Pocket Square: Made in the USA Light Gray Bandanas (3 pack) – $12. Pocket squares can get shockingly pricey. Bandanas are immensely versatile. Solution = use a bandana as a pocket square if the opportunity arises.

The Shirt: Ledbury Evans Performance Oxford Dress Shirt – $59 FINAL ($98). An oxford, but with a performance cotton/poly blend that’s crisper than some casual, smushy, OCBD. Slightly lowered 2nd button is perfect for wearing without a tie. Final sale though. The More Affordable Option: Target Goodfellow Performance Dress Shirt – $33. (Or… whatever light blue dress shirt you already own. There’s enough contrast between the jacket as well as the pants that any light blue dress shirt would work.)

The Pants: Target All in Motion Performance Fabric 5-Pockets – $40. Almost as good as the Lululemon ABC for a fraction of the price. The “Navy” color (shown) is more of a medium to darker leaning steel blue. Not a true navy. So they’ll play nice with the true navy blazer and lighter shirt, as they have a gray-leaning-hue and there’s enough “space” between all the shades.

The Watch: Orient Bambino Small Seconds – $200ishClassy. Interesting. A bit of a throwback in terms of looks but doesn’t look like an antique either. Review here.

The Shoes: Goodyear Welted Anthony Veer Wilson Chukka Boot – $139.99 w/ BREEZE ($199). Sourced via DSW. Goodyear welted with a studded rubber sole for use in the wet and slick months. Wait for one of the almost perpetually running tiered sales that DSW does, and you should be able to get these for around $150 – $160. UPDATE: They’re running a tiered sale at present. Code BREEZE is good for $60 off $199 through 9/18/23.  The More Affordable Option: Clarks Desert Boot Evo in Dark Brown Suede – $140.

The Socks: Darn Tough Men’s The Standard Mid-Calf Lightweight Lifestyle Sock – $26. If you had to pick one type/model of socks that you’d be forced to wear with everything for the rest of your life, from working out to wearing with a suit and tie, these are the socks. No really. “The Standard” from Darn Tough are those socks. Perfect for casual, smart casual, and/or dressed to the nines. They do it all. Made in the USA, extra cushioning protects without being overly bulky, made from temperature regulating and moisture wicking merino wool.

The Belt: L.L. Bean USA Made Essential Belt – $44.95. Very nicely priced at forty five bucks. Made in the USA. Review here.

Chinos, Chukkas, Polo: Get The Blues https://dappered.com/2023/05/chinos-chukkas-polo-get-the-blues/ Wed, 03 May 2023 10:00:31 +0000 https://dappereddev.wpenginepowered.com/?p=242071 Heads up: Buying via our links results in us getting a commission (not always, but just about), which helps keep the lights on around here. Got a suggestion for Chinos, Chukkas, & a Polo? Send those into joe@dappered.com.

Style Scenario Chinos Chukkas Polo get the blues 2023

The Polo: J. Crew Slim Garment-dyed Slub Jersey Polo Shirt – $22.50 ($44.50). One of J. Crew’s bestsellers. Slub gives it some texture without making it look worn out or ratty. Chest pocket and deeper placket keeps it from looking like a basic, budget polo. On sale for half off through tomorrow in “sunfaded blue” and a few other colors.

The Watch: Invicta 1953 retro Pro Diver Automatic – $108.99Full review coming soon. Standby for that.

The Chinos: Old Navy Built-In Flex Rotation Chino Pants for Men – $35ish. 98% cotton / 2% spandex. Nicely affordable. Deep navy. Slim, athletic, or straight fit.

The Sunglasses: Kent Wang Browline – $55. Incredibly comfortable. Acetate and metal frames. 50mm lenses don’t wear overly small. Should fit most average to smaller sized heads. Featured in our Best Sunglasses Under $100 roundup. Not sure why the Kent Wang website makes them look flatter than they are in person. Seems like their image scaling might be wonky on that particular product page. They’ve got classic clubmaster proportions though. Nothing to be concerned about.

The Belt: Made in the USA Flint and Tinder 365 Belt 2.0 – $85. Finally restocked. For the “buy less buy better” crowd, or for those who like to splurge a bit on well made leather accessories. The last smart-casual/casual belt you’ll buy for a very, very, very long time. It’s nice. Quite nice. Full review here. Make sure you size up TWO from your usual pants size. These belts run a little short.

The Socks: Bombas Merino Blend Performance Golf Socks – $24. Far from cheap, but they’re the bee’s knees. Well cushioned without being bulky, good tension so they don’t slouch, and the bee on the instep is pretty cool. Wicks, breathes, the works. Fantastic all day socks.

The Shoes: Clarks Bushacre 3 in Sand Suede – $67One of those downright cheap items in menswear that grossly outperforms its price. Full review here. The previous version (the aptly named Bushacre 2) was famous for being… uncomfortable. Clarks listened to those complaints and built their new Bushacre with a removable multi-density Ortholite insole and a more forgiving faux-crepe rubber sole. They’re squishy out of the box. Noticeably squishy. Suede is bizarrely plush for a sub $100 pair of chukkas. Laces are thick and substantial feeling. Fit is true to your brannock size. A 10.5 fit my normally 10.5 feet just fine.

Huckberry: Up to 40% off End of Year “See You Out There” Sale https://dappered.com/2022/12/huckberry-up-to-40-off-end-of-year-see-you-out-there-sale/ Thu, 22 Dec 2022 12:01:27 +0000 https://dappereddev.wpenginepowered.com/?p=237543 Heads up: Buying via our links results in us getting a commission (not always, but just about), which helps keep the lights on around here. Huckberry: Up to 40% off end of year sale (exp 12/31)

Pretty sure half the Huck team is most of the way up a mountain right now, with the other half checking in every so often in-between sips of winter warmer and bites of venison-mince pie.

That’s good for us. Because like leaving a porch light and table lamp on while you’re gone for a week, they’re running a sale in their absences. Y’know, to make the place look a little more alive.

It’s a select items sale. “Up to” 40% off, with lots of cold weather gear getting cuts. But that’s not a bad thing, being that we just had the solstice. A reminder that free shipping kicks in at $98, with most items also getting some no-extra-cost returns treatment if they don’t work out. Let’s dig in.

Flint and Tinder 365 Corduroy Pants in “Earth” – $58 ($98)

Flint and Tinder 365 Corduroy Pants in "Earth"

The corduroy version of the 365s. It’s worth noting that when these debuted last year (or was it 2020?) they were actually priced at $108. Nice to see them come down in price. And now under sixty bucks.

Rhodes Jackson Chelsea Boot w/ “Heavy” Lug Sole – $193 ($298)

Jackson Chelsea Boot w/

Zoinks. Those’ll do nicely for the rest of winter and into early spring. Uppers are made from water resistant Alfamex Glasgow waxy suede. Sole is a toothy Vibram 100 Montagna lug outsole. Full review here.

Walden Sunglasses – $74 – $89 ($99 – $119)

Walden Sunglasses

Pretty sure these are a Huckberry exclusive, and “Walden” is their shot at making a more premium line of sunglasses when compared to their super affordable “weekenders.” A lot of us have always been suckers for blue lenses. Probably always will be. So those Byways and Woods are particularly tempting. Remember that free shipping kicks in at $98, so not all of these ship for free.

Huckberry All-Weather Duckboot II – $132 ($188)

Huckberry All-Weather Duckboot II

Serious comfort. Classic but still modern looks. Waterproof. Ready for all that the rest of winter (and early spring crap-a-hoola cold and wet) can throw at them. Tan/Brown/Black is shown above, and that’s the color scheme getting the biggest markdown. The “forest” option is also on sale, but those are going for $150. Original black and tan are at full price.

Wills Cable Knit Wool Crewneck Sweater – $74 ($148)

Wills Cable Knit Wool Crewneck Sweater

One of their bestsellers and now half off. For these winter snow-bomb polar vortex times.

Flint and Tinder Made in the USA 10-year Hoodies – $96 ($128)

Flint and Tinder Made in the USA 10-year Hoodies

For the buy-less-buy-better and/or USA Made = preferred crowd. They’re guaranteed for ten years by way of a “we’ll repair it” guarantee. Made out of premium, hard wearing materials (23 oz fleece from South Carolina, Zippers from Georgia, metal tipped drawcords, etc.) Spendy even on sale, but they sure make the case for themselves.

Wellen 55% hemp, 45% organic cotton Tees – $27 – $36 ($45)

Wellen tee shirts

You can almost feel that hemp-texture through the screen. One of the bestsellers. Which is saying something since they normally run $45.

Wellen 55% hemp, 45% cotton Polos – $26 – $29 ($45)

Wellen polos

And the polo version, which is now less than the tees.

72-Hour Merino Long Sleeve Polo – $78 ($98)

72-Hour Merino Long Sleeve Polo

Twenty bucks off their long sleeve version of the 72 hour merino blend polo. Great for travel and outdoor adventures since the collar helps protect the back of your neck. Leans casual, since said collar is self-fabric (made from the same fabric as the body) and thus, a little floppy and less crisp.

Rhodes Mojave Suede Logan – $200 ($250) or Tyler Boots – $131 ($175)

Rhodes boots

Speaking from personal experience, capturing the “true” color of suede shoes and boots can be almost impossible. So who knows what these actually look like in person. This peachy “Mojave” shade is the only color on sale, so maybe they’re just a little too bright for most people. Yet maybe in person they’re not. Can’t say. They do ship and return for free. Review of the Tyler Chukkas can be found here, albeit in the toned down Taupe suede.

Relwen Windzip Jacket – $201 ($268)

Relwen Windzip Jacket

One of Relwen’s more popular styles. Water resistant but still breathable. Exterior is 94% nylon, 6% spandex, lining is a jersey knit 95% polyester, 5% spandex, and the insulation is a 100% polyester, 60 gram down-alternative. Athletic fit isn’t boxy, but it’s not tight. Just the “bright navy” option shown above is getting the price cut. But that’s good if you like blue. Should look great with dark wash jeans, for a sort of northern lights “get the blues” kinda look.

Relwen Windzip Hoodies – $208 ($298)

Relwen Windzip Hoodies

And the hooded version. Both the olive and “midnight” colors are getting the ninety bucks off.

Rhodes Portland Cap Toe Boots – $187 – $201 ($250)

Rhodes Portland Cap Toe Boots

Goodyear welted. Vibram 430 outsole. Fully lined in a soft, pliable, leather. Ships and returns for free. Two colors on sale at post time.

Greys Outdoor Slipper Boots – $64 ($108)

Greys Outdoor Slipper Boots

Mrs. Dappered bought these for herself, and she loves them. She also splurged on the Flint and Tinder 365 Belt not long after. I’m not sure what’s going on, but if she starts to consistently wear blazers and jeans and boots and grows a red beard, we’re gonna have to have a talk.

Free Fly Bamboo Hoodie or Quarter Zip – $62 ($78)

Free Fly Bamboo Hoodie or Quarter Zip

Crazy soft. Weirdly soft. Had a Free Fly bamboo henley at one point (I couldn’t tell you what happened to it?) and I was really surprised at how nice the fabric was. Who knew Pandas were chowing down on the cashmere of the flora world. Okay so bamboo is probably pretty crunchy when it’s hitting panda enamel, but when it’s spun into yarn (viscose) it sure does get soft quick.

Made in Italy Astorflex Greenflex Chukkas – $156 – $165 ($195)

Made in Italy Astorflex Greenflex Chukkas

Handmade in Northern Italy. Timeless style. Really, really nice materials that makes them look and feel noticeably better than the cheaper competition. Ships and returns for free. Full review here. 4.5/5 stars after 400+ reviews on Huckberry’s site. Just be warned that these are a true “desert” boot. Meaning they don’t do real great in cold and slick conditions.

Made in Italy Astorflex Ettoflex ‘ $99 ($165)

Made in Italy Astorflex Ettoflex

More crepe-sole made in Italy Astorflex Chukkas… but less money. These come with a workman style wedge sole and three pairs of eyelets. Thick, full-grain roughout calf leather. Interior lining is soft and smooth.  100% natural rubber soles are extra springy. But again… these are best for wearing in dry conditions. Could still be one of the sneaky-best deals of the sale.

Howler Brothers Lightning Quilted Vest in “copper mine” – $108 ($135)

Howler Brothers Lightning Quilted Vest in "copper mine"

Not your average vest. Lightning shaped stitch, lightweight 60-gram PrimaLoft Gold insulation, not some puffer that’s life-jacket looking. Quite not. Which is a nice move out of them.

Made in the USA Forty-Five Texture Polo – $39 ($78)

Made in the USA Forty-Five Texture Polo

First a point of order… Feels like 45 is starting to move some of their production out of the states (a la Flint and Tinder before them) with some (but not all) of their tees and polos now not being made in the USA. These were made in the USA. 60% cotton/40% poly slubbed yarn. Casual, but not sloppy.

Wellen Wave Quilted Jacket – $100 ($168)

Wellen Wave Quilted Jacket

Hang Ten, Brah. A wave quilted pattern makes these just different enough. Recycled shell and insulation.

Whiskey Peaks Mountain Decanter + Set of Two Glasses – $61 ($65)

Whiskey Peaks Glassware

In case Santa blows it and doesn’t stick this under the tree for you this year. Lead free decanter and glasses. If you’re set on rocks glasses (a lot of us have too many) but want the decanter, that’ll run you $42 on sale.

Made in the USA GORUCK GR1 26L Backpack in WWII Camo – $276 ($345)

Made in the USA GORUCK GR1 26L Backpack in WWII Camo

American made. A splurge for the travelers and/or the early morning ruckers.

Wellen Seawool Fisherman Sweater in Gray – $74 ($128)

Wellen Seawool Fisherman Sweater in Gray

Seawool = a fabric spun from recycled plastic bottles and oyster shells, and then combined with a bit of viscose, nylon, and wool. Plus, the cable knit pattern is timeless. Regular fit.

The up to 40% off End of Year “See you out there” Sale at Huckberry is set to expire New Years Eve. If we missed something from that big pile of sale, goods, send an email to joe@dappered.com

Chinos Chukkas Polo: Get the Blues 2022

The Polo: Banana Republic Luxury Touch Piped Polo – $60Just in. BR continues to stick to their new (almost) no codes no promos policy. But one has to wonder if there’s not some sort of deal, any sort of deal on the horizon as we enter fall. The more affordable option: J. Crew Factory Striped Sweater Polo – $27.50.

The Watch: Todd Snyder x Q Timex 38mm – $124.99 ($179). Or, whatever diver you happen to prefer. But the Todd Snyder Q would be a perfect contemporary yet also retro play here. Watch shown at the very top of the post is an old, out of production, manual wind Christopher Ward.

The Chinos: GapFactory Slim Fit GapFlex Essential Khakis in “medium indigo” – $35ish. Nicely affordable. Terrific color. A slightly desaturated blue shade that has gray hues. Not “scrubs” blue. Not baby blue. A true grayish blue that’s surprisingly versatile. Care to splurge on some ultimate comfort? The oft-mentioned Lululemon Commission Pants come in an “iron blue” that’s a perfect (albeit spendy) alternative for $128.

The Sunglasses: Kent Wang Aviators – $55. Just reviewed in our best sunglasses under $100 round up. Kent Wang does not have a never ending product catalog featuring 8 zillion styles in every color and pattern known to man. Because they don’t need one. They’re excellent at what they do, making classic menswear items with high quality materials and pricing them at reasonable levels. And these silver aviators are pretty unique. They’re silver, but they’re not chrome. Matte finish. No glossy gleaming bling with these. Also available in gunmetal or gold. Polarized lenses in either 54 or 57mm.

The Shoes: Jack Erwin Reade Chukka w/ City Sole – $188A really nice, less expensive (and available stateside) alternative to the Sanders hi-top chukkas. Fits true to size. Made in Portugal. Nice suede uppers, with their proprietary “city” sole that offers great traction while remaining visually unobtrusive. Does take a little break in time. (At least they did for me.)

The Belt: Allen Edmonds Cyrus Avenue Dress Belt  – $50.37 w/ EXTRA30 ($95). Part of the currently running extra 30% off sale items deal. Picks here. Allegedly 30mm wide, not 35mm wide as listed in the description.

The Socks: Bombas Merino Blend Performance Golf Socks – $24. Far from cheap, but they’re the bee’s knees. Well cushioned without being bulky, good tension so they don’t slouch, and the bee on the instep is pretty cool. Wicks, breathes, the works. Fantastic, all day socks.

The Thursday Handfuls are great, but what if Monday rolls around and there are a few sales that can’t wait til the weekend? You’ll find three of the best, with a few picks from each, to start the week below.

TheTieBar: Up to 50% off “get the blues” FINAL sale

The Tie Bar menwear

Blue stuff! It’s a blue stuff sale. The already affordable gets down right inexpensive. Just know that it’s final sale. So no returns. Lots of wheelhouse stuff in there though. Free shipping doesn’t kick in until $50, and it’s $6.95 for orders under $50. So know that going in.

Charles Tyrwhitt: 25% off w/ 30S25

Charles Tyrwhitt menswear and shoes

“But doesn’t CT do shirts?” Yes, yes they do. But unless they’re running a multi buy promo or a big shirting event, 25% off just isn’t that tempting if their shirts are at “full price.” BUT. They do much, much more than shirts. And they’re pretty good at that other stuff. Head here for an in person look at their Goodyear welted shoes (specifically their suede chelsea boots). Orders ship from the UK, and returns will cost you an $8.95 return label fee. Which, isn’t half bad, considering it’ll have to eventually head back to the UK.

Gustin: Made in the USA Boat Shoes Pre-Order – $189

Gustin Made in the USA Boat Shoes

Gustin’s USA Made boat shoes are back. Utilizing Horween’s chromexcel leather, they’re classic summer style through and through. Gustin is a pre-order model, so, you’ll have to pony up the cash first, and then wait. Estimated shipping won’t happen until June.

BONUS  Huckberry: Their UNLINED Waxed Trucker is back – $168

Flint and Tinder unlined trucker jacket

Four colors to pick from. For those that love their toasty flannel or wool lined USA Made Truckers from Flint and Tinder, F&T has brought back the warmer weather version. Cut, sewn, and finished in Los Angeles. British Millerain Tekwax Evolution fabric is weather resistant, but still breathable when it warms up. No discount here since they’re a new arrival, and Huckberry: A. Doesn’t do sales that often, and B. REALLY doesn’t do sales often on their USA Made Flint and Tinder gear.

Also worth a mention…
